Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release

Mankato, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors dropped the opening game in a two-game series against the Rochester Honkers Saturday night at Mayo Field by a score of 6-3. The Anchors record now stands at 3-16.

The offense got started early in the top of the first. Jordan Lee started with a double to right field and went to third on a Kris Goodman double. A passed ball scored Lee and moved Goodman to second. Roman Collins collected a RBI on a groundout scoring Goodman to put Alexandria ahead 2-0.

Rochester wasted little time responding as they scored three in the bottom of the first. After striking out the first batter of the inning, Jason Zgardowski walked three straight to load the bases and allowed a single to Jeff Campbell to bring in two runs. A fielder's choice scored one more and by the end of the first, the Honkers grabbed a 3-2 lead.

Andrew Thome came on in relief in the second of Zgardowski and with a runner on second and two outs, Ryan Boldt hit a weak line drive to left field to score another Honker batter and extend their lead to 4-2.

In the fifth, Rochester struck again. With Casey Fletcher on second and two away, Alex Schultz singled to left to score the runner and the Honkers led 5-2.

In the seventh, the Honkers added another two-out insurance run. Robbie Mouton retired the first two batters of the inning but issued a walk to Campbell. He would come around to score on a double by Fletcher to make the score 6-2.

The Blue Anchors made things interesting in the ninth. Craig Nennig and Jake Bergren walked to start the frame and the bases became loaded on a Cam Duzenack single. After a pitching change, Dalton Leuschek struck out. Aaron Gretz entered the game as a pinch hitter and drew a walk to force in Nennig and cut the deficit to 6-3. Brandon Stennis was able to retire the next two batters and finish the game.

Zgardowski (0-3) took the loss going just one inning allowing three runs (2 earned) on one hit and four walks with two strikeouts. Thome continued his great pitching as he threw four solid innings giving up two runs on two hits and four walks with four punch outs. Mouton responded well to yesterday's outing as he pitched three innings allowing just one run on one hit, two walks and four strikeouts.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Andrew Thome (RHP) - The Fighting Sioux right hander has provided great relief work for the Anchors this season as he has gone two or more innings in five of his six appearances. His 1.86 ERA and 22 strikeouts are both leaders on the squad.
