Green Bay Rockers News Release
Kalamazoo, Mich. - Austin Cangelosi (Indiana) was the hero Sunday night for the Growlers, propelling Kalamazoo to an 8-7 walkoff victory against the Bullfrogs. Kalamazoo scored five unanswered runs to sweep the two game series. Devon Bronson (Eastern Michigan) earned the win pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Grayson Pratt (St. Edward's) was charged with the loss.
The Bullfrogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-RBI double from Ryan Howell (Chabot College) in the top of the first. The lead did not last long, however, as the Growlers would tie the game in the home half of the inning, with a pair of RBI singles from John Spaulding (Ball State) and Jared Kujawa (Western Michigan).
Green Bay would fight back in the third, loading the bases with zero outs after a leadoff single from Dean Long (Emporia State) followed by walks to Matt Beaty (Belmont) and Howell. Ivan Vieitez drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single before an RBI fielder's choice for Paul Jacobson (South Dakota State) and an RBI single from Tony Brandner (No. Illinois) pushed the Bullfrogs lead to 5-2.
Kalamazoo struck back in the fifth inning, tallying one run on an RBI groundout from Cangelosi to cut the lead to 5-3. The Bullfrogs quieted the comeback by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth to extend the Green Bay lead to 7-3. Vieitez and Brandner each picked up their second RBI's of the night in the inning.
As had been the theme of the night, Kalamazoo struck back with two more runs in the sixth to cut the deficit in half to 7-5. Jalen Phillips (Duke) drove in the first run with an RBI double and Cangelosi added his second RBI on a groundout later in the inning.
The Growlers would later load the bases in the seventh with one out after a single from Troy Montgomery (Ohio State), a hit-by-pitch for Spaulding, and another single by Cody Leichman (Central Michigan). However, Luke Watson (UW-Stevens Point) came in relief to work out of the jam allowing no runs.
The Bullfrogs were not so fortunate in the eighth. Cangelosi tripled and scored on a pinch-hit home run by Ryan Bull (Notre Dame) to tie the game at 7-7. Cangelosi would provide the final blow, a groundball to shortstop with the bases loaded in the ninth, which was bobbled. The winning run scored because of the error.
Tomorrow, the Bullfrogs head to Battle Creek for a two-game set with the Bombers. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
