Homers from Dawson, Pineda Not Enough to Defeat Lowell

August 2, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

Despite back-to-back sixth-inning home runs from Andy Pineda and Trey Dawson, the Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the Lowell Spinners in their series-opener 5-3.

Pineda's homer was one of two total hits for him on the night, with his home run being his first of the season for the ValleyCats.

Dawson's solo shot was the first of his career, coming three pitches after Pineda went deep.

Michael Wielansky also picked up a career-high three hits, while Alex McKenna extended his team-best hit streak to seven games.

McKenna ended his night having gone 2-for-2, but just after his second hit he was removed from the game with an apparent leg injury.

The ValleyCats scored their final run of the game in the seventh inning, when Cesar Salazar raced home on a passed ball.

It was Korby Batesole's two run single in the seventh inning however that sealed the ValleyCats' fate in the 5-3 loss.

Now with a record of 25-20, the ValleyCats hold a 1.5-game lead over the Lowell Spinners entering Friday night's game at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

Righty Brett Daniels will start for the ValleyCats opposite of Spinners lefty Brian Brown, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. The Astros 2017 World Series trophy will also be making an appearance at "The Joe" on Friday night.

Play-by-play coverage of the game will begin appoximately 15 minutes prior to first pitch with Steven Cusumano on the Tri-City ValleyCats Radio Network.
