STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Wenceel Perez scored on a wild pitch and Nick Ames hit a sacrifice fly to give the Connecticut Tigers (22-22) a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning but the Staten Island Yankees (25-20) rallied to walk off the Tigers, 3-2 on Thursday at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

Perez finished with the only multi-hit game for Connecticut after a 2-for-4 night at the plate and a run scored. In his last five games, the 18-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic is batting .454 (10-for-22) with eight runs batted in, three runs scored, and a home run.

The Yankees tallied two singles in the ninth and both runners advanced on a passed ball. With first base open, Tigers reliever Dylan Stock (Loss, 2-2) issued an intentional walk to load the bases before Eduardo Torrealba flared a single to left that scored pinch-runner Ricardo Ferreira from third base and ended the ballgame just minutes before heavy rain began to fall.

Staten Island starter Nolan Martinez left a perfect game after five innings with seven strikeouts. No Connecticut batter reached base until Perez singled to lead off the seventh. Following a single and a groundout, Perez scored from third on a Rodney Hutchison (Win, 2-0) wild pitch that tied the game at 1-1. The next batter, Ames, handed Hutchison a blown save thanks to a sac fly RBI that scored Cam Warner and gave the Tigers their first lead at 2-1.

In the eighth, Staten Island tied the game against Stock on a softly-hit, two-out single that fell into right field for Josh Breaux and plated Torrealba from third. The Yankees scored first in the third inning on an Andy Diaz RBI single against Tigers starter Carson Lance. The 23-year-old righty left in line for his first win since June 15 after six innings, one earned run, five hits, and two strikeouts but took the no-decision after Staten Island tied the game In the eighth.

Tigers center fielder Eric De La Rosa denied extra bases for Yankees first baseman Eric Wagaman on a leaping, highlight-reel catch against the wall to end the second inning. Catcher-turned-pitcher Arvicent Perez (Hold, 2) pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout in his eighth professional outing as a reliever. The game lasted two hours and 15 minutes to mark the quickest Connecticut Tigers contest in 2018.

On Friday, the Tigers send left-handed starter Adam Wolf (1-1, 5.28) against the Staten Island Yankees in game two of the series beginning at 7 p.m. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl and Elijah Gonzalez at 6:45 p.m. on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com via TuneIn Radio.
