Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
MORGANTOWN - The Tri-City ValleyCats (10-11) started their longest road trip of 2016 on a good note Friday night, defeating the West Virginia Black Bears (10-11) by a final of 7-3 at Monongalia County Ballpark.
Tri-City started the scoring in the top of the 4th inning when Ryne Birk walked, and Stephen Wrenn homered (8) on a fly ball to left field. Randy Cesar followed with a walk, and Ronnie Dawson popped out to first base before Spencer Johnson homered (1) on a line drive to left center field, his first professional long ball. Johnson (Missouri St) led NCAA Division I in homeruns with 24 this season, before he was drafted by the Astros.
Wrenn, who also singled in the 5th, extended his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games, while Cesar's eight game hit streak came to a close (0-3, 2 BB, 2 R).
West Virginia answered in the bottom of the 5th with a run of their own when Stephen Alemais singled on a line drive to right fielder Brauly Mejia, scoring Kevin Mahala. The Black Bears put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the 8th, but managed just the three runs on eight hits.
The 'Cats roared back in the top of the 6th, though, when Taylor Jones reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Cesar. Later in the inning, Mejia singled on a line drive to left field, scoring Dawson. Alex DeGoti followed with an RBI-single of his own, scoring Jones, and later stole second base.
Pitching in his second stint with the team and first appearance since re-joining the 'Cats from Greeneville, Framber Valdez (W, 1-1) tossed six innings of one run ball, striking out seven. Juan Santos, who was with the team in 2015, earned the save (1) in the last three innings of work, striking out seven batters of his own.
Stephen Meyer (L, 1-2) took the loss for West Virginia, surrendering four runs on five hits in five innings, walking three.
The 'Cats and Black Bears will face off in Game 2 of this three game set tomorrow night, July 9, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Enrique Chavez will be on the hill for the 'Cats, facing off against James Marvel.
