
Fifth Inning Dooms Scrappers

Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
(Staten Island, NY)-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers opened a three game series in New York City by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. However, the Staten Island Yankees would take advantage of two errors and four hits in the fifth inning to push past the Scrappers for a 4-2 win.
The Scrappers would get on the board first in the top of the second inning. Logan Ice started the inning with a walk. Ice would advance to second on a single from Emmanuel Tapia. A wild pitch would move both runners up a base. Ice would then come in to score on an RBI ground out from Jonathan Laureano to put Mahoning Valley up 1-0.
In the top of the third inning the Scrappers would double their lead. Andrew Calica started the inning being hit by a pitch. He would steal second base before advancing to third on Ice's infield single. On the play, a throwing error to first base would allow Calica to score for a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees would cut the deficit to a single run in the bottom of the third inning. Angle Aguilar started the inning with a double. He was then driven in by Dalton Blaser who followed with a single.
With one out in the fifth inning, Ricardo Ferrira doubled. Nick Solak followed with an RBI single to tie the game. Solak would advance to second on a throwing error on the throw to the plate. Luis Torrens followed with an RBI double to right to drive in Solak with the eventual winning run. Then with two outs, Timmy Robinson singled to bring Torrens in for the 4-2 lead.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Scrappers would load the bases to put the tying and go ahead runs on base. However, a strikeout would leave the bases loaded to end the game.
Micah Miniard started and took a no decision. Miniard went 4.0 inning and allowed an earned run on five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. Devon Stewart (0-2) took the loss in 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits. He did not record a walk or a strikeout. Randy Valladares would go 0.2 of an inning in relief. He allowed one hit while walking one and striking out one. Michael Letkewicz went the final 2.1 innings. He allowed one hit and walked two while striking out two.
The Scrappers (5-16) and Yankees (14-7) will continue their series on Saturday evening in Staten Island. Triston McKenzie is scheduled to start for the Scrappers. The team returns to Eastwood Field on Monday July 11th to host the Tri-City Valleycats. Tickets are available online or by calling the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000.
