Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
LOWELL- MASS - The Connecticut Tigers (14-7) capitalized on a five-run sixth inning against the Lowell Spinners (13-8) to claim sole possession of first place in the Stedler Division. The Tigers also were able to extend their win streak to four games.
As they have in the previous three games against the Tigers, the Spinners were able to score first. In the third frame an RBI groundout for Ryan Scott pushed across a run to make it 1-0 Spinners after three. That was the only run Kyle Funkhouser allowed tonight, pitching three innings, allowing just three hits and getting two punch outs.
Ryan Castellanos took over and threw another gem out of the bullpen. Castellanos secured his third win of the season by logging five innings of work, giving up three hits and a run, while striking out four.
The offense provided the pitching staff all they would need in the sixth. Victor Padron (3-4) singled to start the inning against Brandon Workman. Savage followed with a high chopper towards second that Tovar was unable to record an out. With the bases-loaded and no one out, Sam Machonis drilled an RBI-single to right to tie the game at one.
After Workman exited the ballgame, Blaise Salter walked to bring in the lead run, making it 2-1 Tigers. Josh Lester (1-3, 2RBI collected a two-run double in the frame and extended the Tigers lead to 4-2. After the Lester double, Tanner Donnels (2-2, 2BB, RBI) continued his hot streak, singling to right to bring in the fifth run of the inning.
Mark Ecker came in for the ninth inning and struck out the side, 1-2-3 to nab his second save of the season.
Victor Padron grabbed his first three-hit night of the season, while Cole Bauml extended his reach base streak to 15 games.
The Tigers try to win the series tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. when Alfred Gutierrez heads to the hill, seeking his first victory of the year. The Tigers have won three straight series in a row.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid-June through early September. 2016 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale!
