Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - While the Renegades might not be hitting the cover off the ball, their pitching is more than picking up the slack, as two Renegades hurlers combined to hold Brooklyn to one hit in a 2-0 win Friday night at MCU Park.
It was the second consecutive game where Hudson Valley shutout its opponent. Since a 10-0 loss to Tri-City on Sunday, the Renegades have won four in a row and have held their opponents to only four runs over the last 36 innings, or four games. Conversely, the Renegades have only outscored the opposition 12-4 in that span.
Following a one hour 15-minute rain delay at the game's outset, the Renegades started the scoring in the second. With two out and no one on, rightfielder Angel Perez reached on a throwing error by third baseman Blake Tiberi. Perez would steal second, then score on an RBI single to center from catcher Danny De La Calle to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Things stayed that way until the eighth when Hudson Valley added a much-needed insurance run. With runners at first and second and two out, first baseman Nate Lowe grounded a single into leftfield, which scored shortstop Bill Pujols from second to make the score 2-0,
That was all Hudson Valley would need as the pitchers were outstanding once again. Starter Brock Burke (1-1) went six innings allowing the only Brooklyn hit, two walks and a strikeout to pick up his first win of the year. Rodriguez relieved him in the seventh and fired three innings of hitless baseball while walking one and striking out another to record his second save of the season.
Cyclones starter Gabriel Llanes (0-3) was the tough-luck loser for Brooklyn after allowing an unearned run on five hits in six frames.
The Renegades had eight hits, all singles, including two apiece from De La Calle and third baseman Jim Haley. De La Calle also drove in a run.
Brooklyn's lone hit was a leadoff single from centerfielder Jeff Zanon in the fourth.
Hudson Valley continues its three-game series against Brooklyn tomorrow with a 6:00 start. Righty Jose Alonzo (1-1, 0.64 ERA) will toe the slab for the Renegades against right-hander Harol Gonzalez (1-1, 3.63 ERA) of the Cyclones. The Renegades will return to Dutchess Stadium on Monday when they open a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears. First pitch is slated for 7:05.
