Stockton Ports News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stockton Ports fell victim to the long ball on Friday night and in doing so, suffered their 10th consecutive loss. The Bakersfield Blaze hit three home runs, two of them three-run blasts, as they upended the Ports by a final of 8-3 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Bakersfield hit its first three-run home to take the initial lead in the second inning. With two on and one out, Joe DeCarlo homered to left to give the Blaze a 3-0 advantage.

Stockton would come back over the next two innings to tie the score. The Ports benefitted from three walks and a hit batter in the third as they loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch scored the first run of the frame and Sandber Pimentel drew a bases-loaded walk with one out to make it a 3-2 score. Seth Brown would hit into an inning-ending 6-3 double-play to end the frame.

In the fourth, Mikey White was hit by a pitch, Richie Martin followed with a double and Melvin Mercedes provided an RBI groundout to tie the game at 3-3.

Blaze starter Lukas Schiraldi would pitch into the sixth inning but was lifted after walking the first batter of the frame. He would be rendered a no-decision as he allowed three runs on three hits while walking seven and striking out three.

Ports starter Zack Erwin (2-7) struck out Jay Baum to begin the bottom of the sixth but then gave up a single to Daniel Torres, a walk to DeCarlo and a three-run homer to Justin Seager that gave the Blaze a 6-3 lead and chased Erwin from the game. Matt Stalcup took over and gave up a home run to Gianfranco Wawoe to run the Bakersfield lead to 7-3.

Erwin suffered the loss, going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out five.

Stalcup gave up back-to-back doubles to lead off the seventh to Baum and Torres that increased the Blaze lead to 8-3. It was the final run allowed by Stalcup who allowed two runs on four hits in one inning of work. Victor Veliz pitched the final two innings scoreless for Stockton, including a strikeout of the side in the eighth.

Vinny Nittoli (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Schiraldi and picked up the win for the Blaze. Osmer Morales pitched the eighth and ninth scoreless to seal the victory for Bakersfield.

The Ports and Blaze play the third game of their four-game set on Saturday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Kyle Friedrichs (0-1, 14.09 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield left-hander Anthony Misiewicz (3-4, 4.65 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:45 p.m. PDT.
