Quakes Blast Storm on Friday, Remain One Game Out
June 11, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA-- The Rancho Cucamonga offense showed up early in Lake Elsinore on Friday night, scoring in each of the first three innings, as the Quakes cruised to a third straight win overall, downing the Storm by a score of 7-3 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.
The offensive explosion was coupled with a terrific effort on the mound, as Yaisel Sierra gave the Quakes five scoreless innings for a second straight start, helping the Quakes stay within one game of first place in the South Division.
Sierra (4-3) gave up two hits over five scoreless frames, one more hit than he allowed in five scoreless innings in a win over Inland Empire just five days prior. The right-hander struck out four and didn't walk a batter in earning his second straight victory.
The Quakes gave Sierra plenty of support, as Rancho scored a run in the first, followed by three more in the second and then two more in the third, taking a commanding 6-0 lead after just three innings.
Devan Ahart, who saw a seven-game hit streak come to an end on Friday, contributed with an RBI groundout in the first, as Rancho took a 1-0 lead.
Michael Ahmed, who finished with three hits and three RBIs, knocked in Edwin Rios and
Johan Mieses to make it 3-0. Ahmed later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Erick Mejia, putting Rancho up 4-0.
In the third, Ahmed singled home Matt Beaty, then scored on a Garrett Kennedy double to make it 6-0 and eventually chase Storm starter Zech Lemond (1-2).
Mieses crushed a long home run to left-center field in the fifth, his tenth of the year, giving Rancho a 7-0 cushion.
Felipe Gonzalez entered in the sixth and gave up a run, as the Storm spoiled the would-be shutout with an RBI double by Trae Santos, making it a 7-1 affair. Gonzalez was touched for another RBI double in the eighth, as Franmil Reyes brought in Franchy Cordero to make it 7-2. Santos followed with another RBI hit, as he singled home Reyes to round out the scoring at 7-3.
Luis De Paula worked a 1-2-3 ninth to wrap up the win.
Rancho totaled 13 hits, as Ahmed and Mieses came up with three each, with four of those going for extra-bases.
With High Desert's win over Inland Empire on Friday night, the Quakes (37-24) remain one game back of the Mavs (38-23) with just nine games remaining in the first half.
The Quakes will look for a fourth straight win on Saturday night, as they'll get some help from the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Brandon McCarthy slated to make his first appearance of the year. McCarthy, who hasn't pitched since May of 2015, is coming back from Tommy John surgery and is expected to work between two and three innings on his first rehab assignment. Lake Elsinore will counter with right-hander Enyel De Los Santos (0-0), who will make his first start for the Storm. Game time on Saturday will be 6:00pm.
