San Jose Giants News Release
MODESTO, CA - Modesto's Troy Stein hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to break a scoreless tie en route to a 4-2 Nuts victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday evening at John Thurman Field. With the loss, the Giants (34-26) have dropped five out of their last six overall. San Jose and Modesto have now split the first two games of their series.
Ty Ross (1-for-4, 2 RBI) delivered a two-run single in the seventh and Robbie Garvey (2-for-3, 2B) added a pair of hits to lead the Giants offensively in defeat.
Nuts starter Alex Balog (1-0) tossed five shutout innings with three hits allowed to earn the win. Balog, who was making his season debut, walked one and struck out two. Jerry Vasto pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for his ninth save of the year.
Jason Forjet started on the mound for San Jose and began his night with four scoreless innings. Modesto managed just one baserunner over the opening four frames - a first-inning single from Max White. Forjet had retired 12 straight Nuts hitters until issuing a one-out walk to Collin Ferguson in the bottom of the fifth. Stein was up next and he lofted a high fly ball down the left field line that carried over the fence for a two-run homer. The home run was Stein's third of the season and it gave Modesto a 2-0 advantage.
The Nuts added to their lead in the sixth against Forjet as White led off with a triple to deep right. Forjet came back to strikeout the next two hitters, Shane Hoelscher and Drew Weeks, but a wild pitch with Dom Nunez at the plate allowed White to score for a 3-0 margin.
Colorado Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino, who was making a rehab appearance, entered from the Modesto bullpen to begin the top of the seventh. San Jose would mount a rally against Ottavino as Chris Shaw singled to leadoff before Jonah Arenado drew a walk. Brandon Bednar then flied out and Daniel Carbonell struck out, but an Ottovino wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Ross was up next and he lined a single into right center plating both Shaw and Arenado to cut the Nuts lead to 3-2. Troy Neiman was then summoned from the bullpen, but he was greeted by a Garvey double into right center field advancing Ross to third. However with the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Neiman struck out Ronnie Jebavy to end the inning.
Neiman worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth to maintain the one-run Modesto lead before the Nuts added an insurance tally in the bottom of the frame. With Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) on the mound, White led off with a single before stealing second with two outs and taking third when Ross' throw bounced into center. A walk to Nunez followed putting runners on the corners. Modesto then successfully executed a double steal as Nunez swiped second with White coming home to extend the lead to 4-2.
In the top of the ninth, Bednar singled with one out to bring the tying run to the plate, but Vasto struck out Carbonell and retired Ross on a pop out ending the game.
Forjet (6-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out seven during his 101-pitch outing.
