Home Runs Hoist Somerset to Second-Straight Win Over Reading

(Reading, PA) - The Somerset Patriots beat the Reading Fightin' Phils on Tuesday evening, taking down the R-Phils 9-3. Four early Somerset homers and 11 strikeouts from starting pitcher Yoendrys Gomez lifted the Patriots to their second-straight win in Reading.

R-Phils starter Mick Abel struggled early, but later found his groove. The starter gave up eight-earned runs on six hits, striking out seven Patriots batters.

Somerset got on the board in the top of the first inning when Ben Rice crushed a solo home run to right field. The home run was Rice's second home run this week in Reading.

The Patriots bats stayed hot in the second inning, adding five more runs. After Josh Breaux reached base on a leadoff walk, Anthony Seigler notched a two-run homer to right field. After Jesus Bastidas walked later in the inning, Aaron Palensky followed with a two-run homer to right field. The next batter, Jasson Dominguez smoked a solo home run to right-centerfield.

Reading cut Somerset's lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Oliver Dunn continued his hot stretch with a solo homer to right field to make it 6-1.

Adam Leverett took the ball from Abel in the sixth inning. Leverett threw two innings, giving up one run on three hits. Leverett struck out one batter.

Somerset added three-more runs onto their lead in the top of the sixth inning. After Breaux knocked a leadoff double and Seigler was hit by a pitch, Bastidas roped a two-run double. Palensky followed with a RBI double to give Somerset a 9-1 lead.

The R-Phils bounced back in the bottom of the sixth inning, adding two runs to cut the deficit. After Carlos De La Cruz reached on an error, Dunn walked and Robbie Glendinning singled to score De La Cruz. Later, Ethan Wilson hit an RBI single.

Tommy McCollum entered from the bullpen to replace Leverett in the top of the eighth inning. McCollum pitched one inning and struck out two batters.

Andrew Schultz replaced McCollum to pitch the ninth inning. Schultz gave up one hit and struck out two batters.

Reading was unable to complete the comeback, falling 9-3 to Somerset.

Gomez earned the win for Somerset to improve to 1-2 on the season and Abel suffered the loss for Reading to fall to 3-5. With the win, Somerset improves to 23-18 in the second half and Reading falls to 19-22 in the second half with the loss.

Reading and Somerset are back in action for game three of this week's series Thursday at 7 p.m. LHP David Parkinson is scheduled to start for Reading and he will go against RHP Richard Fitts for the Patriots. Saturday night is the 25th Annual Harley Night, with the first 2,500 adults receiving an R-Phils Harley Game Cap, and a Harley ride around the warning track. Saturday will also conclude with fireworks. Finally, on Sunday the first 1,500 kids will receive a Bryson Stott bobblehead.
