Stanley and Holland's Big Nights Not Enough for Akron as Erie Wins 7-6 in 11

August 16, 2023 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Hunter Stanley's strong start and Korey Holland's three hit night was not enough to hold off the Erie comeback as the SeaWolves down the Akron RubberDucks 7-6 in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Canal Park.

Turning Point

After scoring in the top of the 11th, Erie looked to hold on to the late lead in the bottom half. Erie first baseman Jake Holton made a great diving catch on a popped up bunt before doubling off the placed runner at second base to give the SeaWolves two quick outs on one pitch. Blake Holub followed the great play by striking out the next batter to give Erie the 7-6 win.

Mound Presence

Stanley was outstanding in his start for Akron. The right-hander set the first eight SeaWolves down in order to open the game while getting six of his first nine outs by strikeout. Erie got to Stanley for a run in the fourth and fifth, but he was able to escape both innings without allowing further damage. In total, Stanley tossed five innings allowing two run on four hits while striking out seven. Erik Sabrowski (0.1, two earned) and Mason Hickman (0.2, zero earned) combined to toss the sixth. Tyler Thornton tossed a scoreless seventh in his Canal Park debut. Franco Aleman was dominant in relief striking out five of the six he faced. Trey Benton allowed three runs (one earned) over an inning and a third while Davis Sharpe got the final two outs in the 11th via strikeout.

Duck Tales

Akron's offense got rolling early as Petey Halpin launched the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first way over the Cutwater Tiki Terrace to put Akron ahead 1-0. Aaron Bracho added on to the Ducks lead in the bottom of the first by lining a solo home run into Homerville making it 2-0. After Erie got a run closer in the fourth, Akron answered on Bryce Ball's RBI double. The RubberDucks once again answered an Erie run in the bottom of the fifth when Holland doubled into the gap in right-center to put Akron up 4-2. The RubberDucks kept the game alive in the bottom of the 10th after Erie took a two-run lead. Juan Brito lined a one-out single into center to score Connor Kokx. Three batters later, Holland tied the game at 6-6 with a RBI single to right.
