Willmar Stingers News Release
Willmar, Minn. - In it's first home game in 10 days, Willmar continued its recent hot streak with a 4-3 win over Alexandria Tuesday night at Bill Taunton Stadium.
On the heels of a nine-game road trip that saw the Stingers (17-10) go 7-2, Willmar won its 10th game in its last 13, as starting pitcher Will Lydon continued to dominate with his fifth win in his fifth start of the season.
Lydon gave up a run in the first inning, but came back hungry the rest of the way. Lydon allowed just three more hits the rest of his six innings and finished with seven superb innings, giving up just three runs and striking out eight total batters, a season high for any Stingers pitcher. All eight of his strikeouts came in his final five innings.
With Lydon locked in again, the Stingers had just the right amount of run support in store for their starter. Willmar scored three of its four runs in one go in the fourth inning. Storm Wilson continued his recent hot streak at the plate and reached to start the inning on a hit by pitch. After he stole his 12th base of the season, Wilson came around to score on Tyler Leffler's RBI single to tie the game at one. Then a batter later, Lucas Tancas blasted his second home run of the year to put the Stingers up for good.
Alexandria got a run back in the top of the fifth inning, but the Stingers answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead back to two. The Blue Anchors again scored right away again in the seventh, but that was all the more they would get.
Jonathon Lycan worked a perfect set-up situation in the eighth and Brady Anderson set down all three men he faced in the ninth for his fifth straight save.
The Stingers play Alexandria tomorrow night in Alexandria and then return home to the Beehive for a six-game homestand starting Thursday night against Eau Claire with t-shirt giveaway night.
