Disch Pitches to Give Bullfrogs Third Win of Home Stand
June 24, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- A win tonight would put the Bullfrogs (14-12 Overall) at 3-1 on the home stand and 3-3 on the season against the Lakeshore Chinooks (16-11). The Bullfrogs start Nathan Disch (RHP/Jacksonville) against Lakeshore's Kevin Long (RHP/Lehigh).
Game time is set for a 7:05PM first pitch from Joannes Stadium. There is a Fox Communities Credit Union Night with a cash giveaway.
Back-to-Back HR's Sink Bullfrogs In Game One
Last night's starter, Luke Crabb (VCU), who had never allowed more than one earned run in three starts prior, totaled (nine runs) six earned in 3 2/3IP in the 10-5 loss last night.
Crabb gave up a 3-run home run in the first inning to Lucas Raley (Lake Erie) tying him with the Bullfrogs' Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) and Kenosha's Nick Sergakis (Ohio State) for the league lead (5 HR). The next batter, Doug Kraeger (Richmond) took a belt-high pitch over the left-center wall to give Lakeshore a 4-0 lead.
The Chinooks tallied five more in the 4th inning on RBI hits from Greg Deichmann (LSU), Zarley Zalewski (Kent State), Jack Benninghof (Arkansas) and an RBI walk with the bases loaded by Anthony Massicci (Canisius).
A highlight of the evening was a late, unexpected comeback, one that might not have ever been possible the first few weeks of the season.
After yet another Lakeshore score in the seventh, the Bullfrogs responded with five of their own in the bottom of the inning. Mikey Duarte (UC-Irvine) got the rally started with a RBI base-hit, Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) sent two to score with a double, Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) punctured his 14th extra-base hit to right field plating another run, and Desi Ammons (Belmont) drove in the fifth run with a sac-fly.
Even though it was a game that felt far out of reach, the Bullfrogs were in striking distance until the conclusion. They left Ty Blankmeyer on in the eighth without a score, and with no down and the bases, loaded failed to stage a ninth inning comeback.
Lakeshore's Marshall Kasowski (3-0/ 1.58ERA/11 1/3IP/ 24K) (Houston) climbed toward 90 MPH with his fastball, dished out an effective curveball, and allowed no runs in five innings with nine strikeouts.
Disch Tries To Find 2014 Form
Nathan Disch, a native of Appleton (Appleton West H.S.), receives the starting ball for Green Bay. He treks into the matchup with a 6.00 ERA/9IP/9K/11H-4BB. These statistics do not include a start against St. Cloud on May 28th that's result is suspended until July 16th.
In 2014, he went 5-0 with a 1.45 ERA in 37 innings and five starts. In part of two Northwoods League seasons, Disch has never countered the Lakeshore Chinooks, who captured the Summer Collegiate World Series title in 2014.
Green Bay will continue to rely on middle-of-the-order bat, Ryan Donovan (Hofstra), who has just worried about his hitting responsibilities lately with Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) the new starter at first base. Donovan went 2-for-3 yesterday upping his season average to .300. He is tied for the league lead for RBI (27), home runs (5), and ranks third in slugging (.578).
It helps to have protection, and it has made Donovan a more patient hitter. Above him in the lineup in yesterday's game were Mikey Duarte (UC-Irvine), Robb Paller (Columbia), and Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) who had three RBI, three hits, and three runs combined last night.
A more polished collection of bats has raised the team's batting average with runners in scoring position to .273 and to .257 with runners on base.
Green Bay also expects outfielder, Brian Celsi (California), from last year's Bullfrogs team to be back at the end of this week, possibly in time for the Bullfrogs' road set at Battle Creek.
With another high volume slugger, a more permanent lineup will try to aid a pitching staff finally crackling in late June from weeks without rest.
Over the last five games, Bullfrogs starters have walked 20 and only struck out 16 with 16 runs surrendered in 23 1/3 IP. Only Luke Crabb (3K-2BB) struck out more batters than he walked.
Chinooks Keep Scoring; Now In Contention For South Division Crown
With Lakeshore's win (third straight) they are just two games behind the once untouchable Kenosha Kingfish in the South Division standings. Eddy Morgan's club turns to Kevin Long (Lehigh) who makes his second appearance after he took his Mountain Hawks to the NCAA Baton Rouge regional this May.
Over the last three contests, Lakeshore has scored 38 runs on 38 hits. They now have five regular starters with batting averages .275 or above.
Even with rocky pitching that has teetered at the end of games (even Jake Tuttle has allowed 4ER/8.2IP), the Chinooks are starting to round out their roster at all positions. They just welcomed new outfielder Jack Benninghof (Arkansas) and today activated Weston Mason (RHP/Louisiana-Monroe) to the active roster.
Lakeshore's defense has also mirrored the development of the Bullfrogs. Up the middle, Anthony Massicci (Canisius) and Kyle Fiala (Notre Dame) are about as sure-handed as they come. With Colby Fitch (Louisville) as the primary catcher, the Chinooks also have a legitimate defensive backstop.
A win would allow the Bullfrogs to come out of a series with a split/win for the 13th straight time (excluding suspended/rained out series vs. STC and BC).
After tonight's 7:05PM contest, the Bullfrogs welcome Battle Creek for three games including a double-header on Thursday, June 25th starting at 5:35PM.
