Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - History was made at Frawley Stadium on Tuesday night in the series opener between the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (31-26, 66-61) and Wilmington Blue Rocks (26-31, 61-66). Pelicans 2B J.C. Holt's single to centerfield in the first at-bat of the ballgame extended his hitting streak to 19 games, giving the former LSU Tiger the longest hitting streak in the history of the Pelicans franchise. On top of Holt's record setting performance both teams combined to score 21 runs, knock 28 hits, crank six total home runs, and commit five errors. In the end the Pelicans walked away victorious, 11-10.

The Pelicans went to work early and leaped out to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning. After Holt led the game off with a single, LF Carl Loadenthal grounded into a fielder's choice to reach the base paths. Loadenthal proceeded to steal second, his 23rd of the year, to get into scoring position. Later in the inning Loadenthal would come into score on an RBI ground out to second by SS Diory Hernandez, putting the Birds up 1-0.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning the Blue Rocks turned the power switch on and ripped three home runs to erase the Pelicans early lead. LF Jeff Corsaletti hammered a solo shot, RF Claudio Arias blasted a grand slam, and 1B Ian Bladergroen pumped out a solo homer to cap off a six-run 3rd inning, which helped the Rocks build a 6-1 advantage.

Just when it appeared the Blue Rocks had taken a more than comfortable lead the Pelicans battled back and unthinkably regained the lead in the top of the 4th inning. Myrtle Beach sent 12 batters to the plate in the 4th and smacked out two home runs of their own, including a two-run job by C Clint Sammons and a three-run bomb off the lumber of 3B Van Pope. Sammons 6th homer of the season and Pope's team-leading 14th, helped the Pelicans piece together an eight-run inning which put them on top, 9-6.

The power surge continued in the bottom of the 4th inning when Corsaletti connected for his second home run of the game, a solo shot over the right field fence, pulling the Blue Rocks within two, 9-7.

Wilmington came all the way back to tie the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the 5th inning, just adding to the twists and turns of the wild series opener. Again, Corsaletti was the man that provided the big hit for the Blue Rocks, this time with a two-run double to deadlock the game.

The score remained tied until the top of the 7th inning when the Pelicans took the lead for good. With one out, SS Robert Marcial delivered an RBI single into centerfield, scoring C Steve Pyzik, who reached on an error earlier in the inning. Marcial came across the dish with the final run of the game for the Pelicans on an RBI base hit to left-centerfield courtesy of LF Ovandy Suero, which made the score 11-9 in favor of the "Fightin' Feathers."

The Pelicans held off a late rally by the Blue Rocks and took game one of the three-game series in the "First State," 11-10.

Pelicans starter Stephen Russell was touched up for seven runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work in a no-decision. Reliever Brad Nelson (W, 1-0) continued his impressive season with two more scoreless frames, bringing his ERA to 0.81 for the year. Nelson was credited with the win thanks to the pair of shut out innings. Charlie Morton (S, 1) picked up a save, working a perfect 9th inning.

On Wednesday night the Pelicans and Blue Rocks square off in game two of the three-game series in Delaware at 7:05 pm. The Pelicans will return to Coastal Federal Field on Tuesday, August 29th when they play host to the Potomac Nationals at 7:02 pm, which will begin the final homestand of the 2006 season.
