
Blue Rocks drop third straight in slugfest

Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (35-35, 26-31) dropped a slugfest on Tuesday night in an 11-10 loss to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (35-35, 31-26), Carolina League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The Blue Rocks out hit the Pelicans 15-12 and connected for four home runs in the game, two by Jeff Corsaletti, but came up short in their third straight loss.
The Pelicans broke a 9-9 tie in the seventh inning plating two unearned runs off reliever Kevin Guyette for an 11-9 advantage. The inning began with an error from Andrew Pinckney that allowed Steve Pyzik to reach. Then with one out in the frame Robert Marcial and Ovandy Suero connected for back-to-back RBI singles for an 11-9 lead.
Guyette (1-6), making his first relief appearance for the Blue Rocks, worked 4.1 innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits for the loss. Guyette also walked one and struck out six.
The Blue Rocks tried to rally in the eighth inning plating one run in the frame to trim the lead to 11-10 but could not get any more. With runners on first and second and two outs Bryan Pritz connected for an RBI single to trim the lead to 11-10. Corsaletti was intentionally walked to load the bases for Jeff Natale.
Natale hit a ball deep in the hole on the left side of the infield and shortstop Diory Hernandez ranged far to his right and threw to second for the force out on Corsaletti. Corsaletti appeared safe at second but was ruled out for the final out and to end the Blue Rocks threat.
Wilmington trailed 9-6 after four innings but rallied to tie the game at 9-9. Corsaletti started the rally with a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning to trim the lead to 9-6. For Corsaletti it was his team leading 11th of the year.
The Blue Rocks plated two more runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 9-9 and again it was Corsaletti doing the damage. With two on and two outs Corsaletti connected for a two-run double into the right field corner.
After the Blue Rocks plated six runs in the third inning for a 6-1 lead the Pelicans rallied back with eight runs in the fourth inning for a 9-6 lead. Clint Sammons got the scoring started with a two-run homer that trimmed the lead in half. The Pelicans plated two more runs on an RBI fielder's choice and a sac-fly to trim the Blue Rocks lead to 6-5.
Van Pope followed up two batter latter with a three run homer to give the Pelicans an 8-6 lead. Sammons capped off the scoring in the inning with his second extra base hit in the frame, an RBI double, to give the Pelicans a 9-6 lead.
Blue Rocks starter Scott Shoemaker got the no-decision in 3.2 innings of work and allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits. Shoemaker walked two, struck out one and allowed two homers.
Wilmington plated six runs in the third inning highlighted by a grand slam from Claudio Arias for a 6-1 lead. Corsaletti led off the frame with a sole home run to right field to tie the game at 1-1. Then with two outs in the frame and the bases loaded Arias connected for a grand slam to left center field for a 5-1 Blue Rocks lead. It was the Arias' seventh homer of the season and the Blue Rocks second grand slam of the season. Ian Bladergroen followed up with a home run, his ninth of the season to give Wilmington a 6-1 lead.
The Pelicans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI ground out from Hernandez.
The Blue Rocks and Pelicans continue their series on Wednesday night. The Blue Rocks will send right-hander Gary Galvez (5-8, 5.78) to the mound while the Pelicans will counter with lefty Kelvin Villa (7-6, 3.67). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Wilmington tied a season high mark with four home runs in a game.
The Pelicans plated eight runs in the fourth inning, the most runs allowed in a single inning this season by the Blue Rocks pitching staff.
Corsaletti drove in four runs in a game for the second time this season and it was his 15th multi-RBI game. It was also his 27th multi-hit game and ninth three hit night.
Claudio Arias' grand slam in the third inning was the Blue Rocks second of the season.
The grand slam also came in the Stewart's Brewing Company Grand Slam Inning. Sandy Staiger was the lucky winner in the inning bringing home $5,000 and a happy hour for 20 people. Staiger became the first ever winner since the Stewart's Brewing Company Grand Slam Inning began back in 1998.
The Blue Rocks connected for back-to-back home runs for the second time this season.
