New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
AKRON, OH - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats shook off their early-June struggles and walloped the Akron RubberDucks 9-1 Tuesday night at Canal Park.
New Hampshire (27-30) snapped a four-game losing streak and banished their batting issues, doubling their monthly scoring output in one game. The RubberDucks (26-30) never led, and mustered only two hits against the Fisher Cats hurlers. New Hampshire was 5-12 with runners in scoring position on the day.
The Fisher Cats drew first blood in the top of the third against Akron starter Ryan Merritt (L, 3-5). Jack Murphy lined a one-out single up to center, and advanced to second when Jorge Flores bounced out to third base. Dalton Pompey rapped a single through the middle to move Murphy to third base, and Ronald Torreyes hit a seeing-eye single to center to score Murphy and make it 1-0 New Hampshire.
New Hampshire tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out and a 1-1 count, K.C. Hobson hammered a fastball well over the right-field fence, running New Hampshire's advantage to 2-0. The RubberDucks answered in the bottom of the fourth, as Anthony Gallas lined a fastball from New Hampshire starter Matt Boyd (W, 6-1) over the left-field wall for a solo dinger that cut the lead to 2-1.
The Fisher Cats struck back in a big way in the sixth inning. Kevin Nolan led off the inning with a single against Merritt, bringing up Hobson. The first baseman hit a sky-scraping blast to right field for his second homer of the game, advancing the New Hampshire edge to 4-1. The Fisher Cats got another in the top of the seventh, as Ronald Torreyes drilled a double to the left-center field gap to plate Murphy and make it a 5-1 Fisher Cats lead.
The New Hampshire bats boomed in the ninth inning, beginning with a run on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Flores. Torreyes then sliced a two-run single to right-center, and Dalton Pompey scored on a wild pitch by Akron reliever Jeff Johnson to give New Hampshire their final 9-1 lead.
Boyd was stellar over seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while whiffing four. Jimmy Cordero dealt two scoreless frames of relief, fanning one and walking two.
New Hampshire will look to make it two in a row Wednesday against the RubberDucks from Canal Park. Casey Lawrence will be on the hill for New Hampshire against Akron righty Adam Plutko on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Radio coverage will begin at 6:45 with Ben Gellman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats will return home on June 19th to face Binghamton at 7:05 p.m. on an Atlas Fireworks night, with a Family Sleepover and Scout Night! Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com or by calling the ticket office at (603)-641-2005.
