Baysox Bats Falter in Return Home

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox opened their three-game home series against Binghamton with a game that was scoreless for the first five innings before the B-Mets finally got to the Baysox pitching staff for eight runs over the final four innings. Bowie's offense managed just one run on six hits in an 8-1 loss Tuesday night while the pitching staff tied a season-high with nine walks.

The game started as a pitcher's duel but, despite five scoreless innings from Baysox starter Elih Villanueva, things began to unravel in the sixth. Binghamton's Gilbert Gomez led off with a double to center field. Then with two outs, Villanueva walked Michael Conforto to put men on first and second and Brock Peterson singled to drive in the first run of the game. Josh Rodriguez followed with a triple on a long fly ball to center field to score two runs and give the Mets a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox struck back in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a lead-off double from Sharlon Schoop and an RBI single from Ozzie Martinez to make the score 3-1.

Binghamton broke the game open in the eighth inning after Matt Hobgood entered in relief and issued back-to-back walks. Brock Peterson then doubled to score a run, and then Hobgood intentionally walked Josh Rodriguez to load the bases with one out. Marcel Prado replaced Hobgood and in the following at-bat, committed a throwing error on a ball hit back to the pitcher on an attempted force out at home that allowed a run to score. With the bases still loaded, Binghamton's Xorge Carrillo and Eudy Pina hit back-to-back singles to score two more runs for the Mets and make the score 7-1.

Gene Escat came on to pitch for the Baysox in the ninth inning and walked four of the seven batters he faced to score the final run of the game and give the Mets an 8-1 lead and eventual win.

Villanueva took the loss for the Baysox, his second loss in a row as he threw six innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Binghamton starter Rainy Lara (4-2, 3.57) earned the win for the Mets throwing 7.0 innings and giving up only one run on five hits and striking out four. The Baysox bullpen struggled, giving up five runs and walking seven.

Bowie looks to get back in the win column on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Prince George's Stadium in the second game of the series. Tim Berry (1-4, 6.28) takes the mound for the Baysox against Binghamton's Gabriel Ynoa (2-3, 4.70).
