Hitmen Take out T-Birds

KENT - The Calgary Hitmen defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-2 Saturday night in front of 4,225 fans at accesso ShoWare Center.

The T-Birds next game is Saturday at 6pm as they travel to Portland to face the Winterhawks in a game that is being broadcast on JOEtv. JOEtv can be seen on Channel 22/Cable 110.

Calgary (10-13-2-0) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mark Kastelic at 4:41 of the first period. Luke Coleman and Kaden Elder had the assists.

Kastelic scored a power-play goal at 6:12 of the second to extend the Hitmen lead to 2-0. Carson Focht and Jake Kyrski had the assists.

Both teams had 10 shots on goal in the first period.

The Hitmen took a 3-0 lead at 1:59 of the second period on a goal by Carson Focht.

Seattle (8-11-3-0) cut the lead to two goals with a shorthanded goal by Matthew Wedman at 7:55 of the second. Wedman outraced a Hitmen defenseman to the puck in the offensive zone for a breakaway. Wedman came in on Calgary goalie Carl Stankowski and went forehand then backhand and then roofed the over goalie's left pad.

The T-Birds have scored a shorthanded goal in back-to-back games and in three of the last four games.

Calgary had a 22-17 advantage in shots after two periods by outshooting Seattle 12-7 in the second period.

Zack Andrusiak scored at 10:05 of the third period to cut the Hitmen lead to one goal. Simon Kubicek took a shot from the right point that deflected off a Hitmen defenseman to Andrusiak in the right circle. Andrusiak got the loose puck and ripped it over Stankowski's left shoulder for his 11th goal of the season. Andrusiak has a five-game goal streak.

Seattle pulled goalie Liam Hughes for an extra attacker with 1:21 left in the game. Coleman hit the empty net at 18:49 to put the Hitmen up 4-2. The T-Birds pulled Hughes again and Coleman scored a second empty-net goal at 19:40 of the third.

Hughes had 31 saves on 34 shots and Stankowski had 24 saves on 26 shots.

Single game tickets are on sale online on the T-Birds website and at the accesso ShoWare Center box office.

The T-Birds are now taking orders for Flex-24 Ticket packages. Fans that purchase the 24-Flex Ticket Package will be able to select any available premium seat for any game, in any ticket combination, during the 2018-19 season.
