The Kelowna Rockets picked up their third win in a row Friday night, they defeated the Victoria Royals 3-2 at Prospera Place.
The first period saw both teams go back and forth, but neither could get the puck past the starting goaltenders. The Rockets and Royals entered the first intermission in a scoreless tie.
The score remained deadlocked at zeros until just past the midway point of the second period. The Royals Matthew Smith was called for tripping Conner Bruggen-Cate 9:32 into the middle frame, 21 seconds later Mitchell Prowse joined his teammate in the box when he hooked Leif Mattson. The Rockets capitalized on the five on three power play when Lassi Thomson launched a pass from Liam Kindree at the net, Kyle Topping(10) was on the doorstep to put the puck past Royals starter, Griffin Outhouse 10:47 into the period. The Rockets headed to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Like the majority of the game, the third period was closely contested. Liam Kindree(5) extended the Rockets lead by two 14:05 into the period. With three minutes remaining in the game, the Royals elected to go with an empty net. Victoria's Kaid Oliver(14) was able to cut the Rockets lead in half when he got one past Rockets starter Roman Basran 18:18. Leif Mattson(9) collected his 100th WHL career point when he scored an empty net goal with 47 seconds to go in the game. The Rockets skated away with a 3-1 victory.
Kelowna's record jumps to 11-13-1-0.
Roman Basran's record moves to 9-8-1-0, he turned aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced. The Rockets outshot the Victoria Royals 29-24.
The Rockets are back in action tomorrow, November 24th they travel south to play the Everett Silvertips. Kelowna will be at home again Wednesday, November 29th when they host the Vancouver Giants.
