Calgary, AB - Carson Focht scored a career-high four goals while Kaden Elder notched his first ever Western Hockey League hat-trick to lead the Calgary Hitmen to a 9-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday at Scotiabank Saddledome.
It was the 3rd annual TELUS BE BRAVE Anti-Bullying Game played in front of 15,084 fans including over 14,000 Calgary and area students from 101 schools. They learned about the importance of acceptance and bullying prevention from two guest speakers, concourse displays and in-game activities. Calgary Stampeders Alumnus and TELUS Wise Ambassador for the Stamp of a Champ program Rob Cote led the TELUS Wise Digital Pledge to #EndBullying prior to puck drop.
Akeem Haynes, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and self-help author, spoke in the first intermission and Rilee Manybears, athlete from Siksika Nation and ambassador for the AMA Youth Run Club, addressed the crowd in the second intermission. Both speakers were presented by A1 Chesney Service Experts.
The Hitmen, who led 3-2 after the opening period, extended their advantage to 7-2 through 40 minutes. Luke Coleman and James Malm also scored for Calgary with Josh Prokop adding four assists and Vladislav Yeryomenko three helpers.
Carter Chorney, Connor Horning and Matthew Culling replied for Swift Current.
The Hitmen outshot Swift Current 32-14 to improve to 16-6-2 since January 1. The victory moves them to within four points of Lethbridge for second place in the Central Division with the Hurricanes to visit Prince Albert tonight.
Calgary will now get set to play three games in three days this weekend. On Friday, Mar. 1 the Brandon Wheat Kings visit the `Dome in a 7:00 p.m. start for Multicultural Night. The Mount Royal Rocky Mountain Taiko Ensemble will play during whistle breaks and during the second intermission. Based in the Conservatory at Mount Royal University, group members are from all ages and learn traditional and contemporary Japanese drum pieces and perform year-round in the community at festivals and events.
The Hitmen will then open a home-and-home with Kootenay heading to Cranbrook on Saturday, Mar. 2 before hosting the ICE on Sunday, Mar. 3 at 4:00 p.m. Sunday's game is RE/MAX Presents: WHL Suits up with Don Cherry to Promote Organ Donation and Sunday Funday presented by Ricky's All Day Grill.
