Raiders Stay Firm at Second in Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings

February 27, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Toronto, Ont. - The Canadian Hockey League today announced the week twenty-three edition of the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2018-19 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL's Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

Remaining among the best in the nation for another week were the Prince Albert Raiders. A 4-0 shutout against the Kootenay ICE and a 7-1 win against the Brandon Wheat Kings allowed the league-leading squad to clinch the top spot in the WHL's Eastern Conference as well as their fourth division title in franchise history. With a 49-8-1-2 record through 60 games, the Raiders are one win away for surpassing the 1971-72 Calgary Centennials for the most victories in a 68-game season. They'll get an opportunity to set that record Wednesday, February 27 (7:00 p.m. CT) at the Art Hauser Centre against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Staying in the seventh position for another week were the Everett Silvertips. After taking a 3-2 loss in overtime against the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Silvertips responded with a 6-3 win against the Prince George Cougars. After briefly losing their first-place standing in the Western Conference, the Silvertips are once again back in the lead, enjoying a two-point advantage. They'll look to extend that lead Friday, March 1 (7:35 p.m. PT) at Angel of the Winds Arena against the Tri-City Americans.

Making their way back into the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings this week were the Vancouver Giants, who clinched their sixth division title in franchise history Saturday night, playing three-straight games against the Victoria Royals. Through those three games, the Giants posted a 2-0-0-1 record, outscoring the Royals 10-5 along the way. The focus for the Giants now shifts to claiming the top spot in the Western Conference. Sitting two points behind the Silvertips with a game in hand, the Giants will take to the ice against the Kelowna Rockets Friday, March 1 (7:30 p.m. PT) at the Langley Events Centre.

Earning an honourable mention this week were the Saskatoon Blades. After a loss to the Wheat Kings Friday in Manitoba, the Blades rebounded with wins over the Kootenay ICE and Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday and Tuesday respectively. Saturday's win, mixed in with a loss by the Wheat Kings, qualified the Blades for the WHL Playoffs for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign. The Blades will look to stay strong down the stretch, closing out their season series with the Regina Pats Friday, March 1 (7:00 p.m. CT) at the SaskTel Centre.
