Wheat Kings Captain Named Telus Player of the Month
February 27, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - The Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with TELUS, have announced that for the second time this season, captain Stelio Mattheos has been chosen the Western Hockey League club's Player of the Month for February.
Chosen first overall in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary, Mattheos has been on a torrid scoring pace since January's Trade Deadline.
The 19-year old Winnipeg product, who was chosen by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round of the 2017 National Hockey League draft, leads the Wheat Kings in scoring this season with 40 goals and 90 points in 56 games. The 90 points equal a career high for the all star center while the forty goals are three shy of his best ever season.
Mattheos scored 43 goals and 90 points during the 2017-18 campaign.
During the month of February, Mattheos finished among the league leaders with ten goals and 24 points in twelve games as he led the Wheat Kings to an 8-4 record and moved them back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture. He also led the club with a plus minus rating of +6 during the month.
A member of the 2016 WHL Champions, Mattheos currently moved past Ryan Craig and into 25th place on the Wheat Kings all time scoring list with 123 goals and 272 points in 244 career games.
Brandon's representative at Novembers Canadian Hockey League Canada - Russia Series, Mattheos earned player of the month honours for leading the club with fourteen goals and 25 points in fifteen games during the first month of the 2018-19 regular season.
He joins Cole Reinhardt (January), Linden McCorrister (December) and Luka Burzan (November) as this year's TELUS monthly award winners.
This award is presented to the Wheat King, who best demonstrates success - both on and off the ice - as a teammate and role model in the community.
TELUS will present Cole with this monthly award during the first intermission of the Wheat Kings next home game - Wednesday, March 13th - against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
That game will be the second and final "Rain Check" game of the season, meaning fans with unused tickets (dated November 23rd - February 22nd) can exchange them at the box office for a "free" ticket to this game (regular box office agency fees apply).
In the meantime, the Wheat Kings return to action this weekend as they kick off a 6-game road trip with games in Calgary and Edmonton on Friday and Saturday nights.
