Hitmen Open 2019 Training Camp with Fitness Testing

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club opened their 2019 Training Camp with veteran and rookie fitness testing today at the Scotiabank Saddledome. A total of 79 returning players and prospects were put through a series of tests conducted by Hitmen Strength and Conditioning Coach Sean Hope-Ross.

"There were several players who shattered their results from last year," said Hope-Ross. "Overall, we saw significant improvement from the entire group which should translate onto the ice."

The top three performers at main camp based on overall testing were Mark Kastelic, Andrew Viggars, and Riley Fiddler-Schultz. Shown below are the leaders in each category.

Main Camp Fitness Testing

Bench Press (135 lbs.): Mark Kastelic (38 reps), Andrew Viggars (32 reps), Riley Fiddler-Schultz (28 reps)

Full Extension Chin-ups to Muscular Failure: Layne Toder (16 reps) and a tie between Riley Stotts and Andrew Viggars (15 reps)

Standing Long Jump: Mark Kastelic (282 cm), Sean Tschigerl (278 cm), Andrew Viggars (275 cm)

Fastest 300 Yard Shuttle Run: Carson Focht (58.9 seconds), Trenton Curtis (59.5 seconds) and four players tied at 60 seconds

Hitmen 2019 Training camp now moves to The Kyle Stuart Memorial Arena at Edge School (33055 Township Rd 250) for on-ice practices and games beginning tomorrow, Thursday, August 29 at 8:00 a.m.

On-ice practices and games will see rookies split onto Team Jones and Team Moran with veterans on Team Getzlaf and Team Ladd. There is also a Young Guns Game for the top 15,16 and 17-year-olds on Saturday, August 31 at 1:00 p.m. The annual Calgary Hitmen intrasquad game on Sunday, September 1 at 12:00 p.m., acts as the conclusion of Training Camp.

All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public.

The Hitmen open the 2019 Western Hockey League pre-season with a home-and-home against the Oil Kings beginning at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton on Friday, September 6. Then on Saturday, September 7, Calgary hosts the Oil Kings at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on Tsuut'ina Nation in a 7:00 p.m. start. Tickets are on sale now at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex for $10 each. The four-game schedule concludes on Sunday, September 15, with the lone game at the Scotiabank Saddledome against the Red Deer Rebels. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

The 68-game regular season schedule begins on the road in Swift Current against the Broncos on Saturday, September 21. The Hitmen home opening weekend begins on Friday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. against the Oil Kings. Calgary returns to Scotiabank Saddledome ice two days later on Sunday, September 29, against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

The 2019-20 Hitmen Hockey Pass is on sale now and includes 33 game tickets plus one ticket voucher to be used anytime, in any combination. Pass holders also receive a special 25th anniversary jersey, $50 Scotiabank Saddledome gift card and a complimentary ticket to a select Flames, Roughnecks or Stampeders game. Passes start at less than $7 per ticket for kids and under $15 for adults.
