Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Calgary, AB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off a six game Western Hockey League road trip Friday night by dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to the Hitmen in Calgary.
With the loss, the Wheat Kings record slipped to 29-23-4-4 and they failed to gain ground on two of the clubs that they're chasing for one of two wild card playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
Calgary moved six points up on the Wheat Kings, while Red Deer lost in overtime to Prince Albert, to remain two points ahead of Brandon.
Medicine Hat meanwhile fell 4-2 in Edmonton, leaving the Tigers a single point up on Brandon with the Wheat Kings still enjoying a game in hand.
In Friday's game, Riley Stotts scored at the 2:09 mark of overtime as the Hitmen battled back from a 2-1 second period deficit.
Hitmen captain Mark Kastelic tied the game on a third period powerplay goal, while James Malm rounded out the scoring for the winners.
Connor Gutenberg and Caiden Daley replied for the Wheat Kings, who received an outstanding effort from goalkeeper Jiri Patera.
The Vegas Golden Knights prospect turned aside 39 shots, including twenty in a scoreless first period and did everything he could to give his club a chance to win.
"Our goalie was very good from start to finish," Brandon coach David Anning told the Brandon Sun following the game. "He made a number of key saves, he tracked the puck very well, he gave up very few second chances and made some very timely saves. I thought he was the difference after 20 minutes in keeping us at 0-0 and in the hockey game. I'm disappointed we couldn't get two points for him."
Anning's Wheat Kings travel to Edmonton Saturday night, before travelling to Cranbrook for a Tuesday night date against the Ice.
Following this 6-game excursion, the Wheat Kings will return home to play two of its final three games on home ice, beginning with a date with Moose Jaw on Wednesday, March 13th - Rain Check Night - at Westoba Place.
Tickets to Brandon's final two home games are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at www.keystonecentre.com.
