2019 #WHLPlayoffs Clinching Scenarios - March 2

March 2, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Tri-City Americans News Release

Here are the 2019 Western Hockey League Playoff scenarios for Saturday, March 2.

The Prince Albert Raiders will win the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy:

If they earn at least a single point against the Moose Jaw Warriors (7:00 p.m. CT/WHLLive.com)

OR

If the Vancouver Giants lose in any fashion to the Kamloops Blazers (7:00 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com)

The Raiders have a 50-8-2-2 record and 104 points through 62 games. The Giants have a 42-14-2-2 record and 88 points through 60 games. The Giants can tie the Raiders at 50 wins and 104 points and hold the tiebreaker against them due to a 3-1 win on Thursday, January 24 in the lone meeting of the season between the two clubs.

The Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the WHL team earning the most points from the regular season. Along with Bill Hunter, Munro was one of the original founders of the WHL. He also served as General Manager of the Estevan Bruins and both General Manager and Coach of the Calgary Centennials. The Raiders previously earned the trophy back in the 1984-95 WHL Regular Season. The 2012-13 Portland Winterhawks were the last team to win both the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy and the Ed Chynoweth Cup in the same season. - The Edmonton Oil Kings will clinch a spot in the 2019 WHL Playoffs:

If they win in any fashion against the Brandon Wheat Kings (7:00 p.m. MT/WHLLive.com)

OR

Edmonton earns a single point against the Wheat Kings AND the Medicine Hat Tigers lose in any fashion to the Swift Current Broncos (7:00 p.m. MT/WHLLive.com).

The Oil Kings currently lead the Central Division with a 36-18-4-4 record and 80 points in 62 games. The Wheat Kings occupy third place in the Wild Card race with a 29-33-4-4 record for 66 points in 60 games and can reach a maximum of 82 points by the end of their regular season schedule. A win by Edmonton would bring the Oil Kings to 82 points on the season with the Wheat Kings being able to achieve a possible 81 or 80 points by the end of the regular season.

In the second scenario, the Tigers sit in the second Wild Card spot with a 31-25-3-2 record and 67 points through 61 games. They can achieve a maximum of 81 points by the end of the regular season. A single point or regulation loss by the Tigers would give them a possible 80 points by the end of the regular season while the Oil Kings would be at 81 points if they earned a single point as part of this scenario. - The Victoria Royals will clinch a spot in the 2019 WHL Playoffs:

If the Royals win in any fashion against the Prince George Cougars (7:05 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com)

OR

If the Kamloops Blazers lose in regulation to the Vancouver Giants (7:00 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com)

OR

If the Royals earn a single point against the Cougars AND the Blazers earn in a single point against the Vancouver Giants

The Royals have a 32-25-2-2 record for 68 points through 61 games. The Blazers have a 23-30-4-2 record for 52 points through 59 games.

Entering tonight, the Blazers can achieve 32 wins and 70 points by the end of the regular season. A win by Victoria would give them 33 wins and 70 points, earning the tiebreak against the Blazers if necessary. A loss by the Blazers would allow them to only reach 32 wins and 68 points by the end of the regular season, with the Royals holding the tiebreak from the season series against the Blazers.

A single point by both clubs would mean the Blazers could achieve a maximum of 31 wins and 69 points by the end of the regular season, losing on the first tiebreak to the Royals. - The Tri-City Americans will clinch a spot in the 2019 WHL Playoffs:

If they earn a single point against the Spokane Chiefs (7:05 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com)

OR

The Kamloops Blazers lose in any fashion to the Vancouver Giants (7:00 p.m. PT/WHLLive.com)

The Americans currently sit fourth in the U.S. Division and in the first Wild Card spot with a 33-24-2-1 record through 60 games for 69 points. The Blazers have a 23-30-4-2 record for 52 points through 59 games. Entering tonight, the Blazers can achieve 32 wins and 70 points by the end of the regular season.

A single point by the Americans would give them 33 wins and 70 points, more than the Blazers can achieve in either statistic by the end of the regular season. A loss by the Blazers would bring their possible points total down to 68, clinching a spot for the Americans. - So far, six teams have secured their spot in the 2019 WHL Playoffs: Prince Albert Raiders, Everett Silvertips, Vancouver Giants, Portland Winterhawks, Saskatoon Blades, and Spokane Chiefs. The Raiders and Giants have clinched their respective divisions while the Raiders have also secured the top record in the Eastern Conference.
