Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club is proud to announce that captain Cody Sylvester raised $17,312 for his Chance To Play program, a fundraising initiative created by the 20-year-old to support local minor hockey. The funds collected will benefit kids who would not normally have the chance to play hockey by providing them with an opportunity to participate in sport.
"I've had the opportunity to play hockey all my life and wanted to do something to give back to the people in the community who have treated me exceptionally well during my time with the Hitmen," said Sylvester. "I decided to raise money for kids who may not have the chance to play hockey so they could follow their dreams like I did."
"Cody has been an integral member of the Hitmen family and a strong community ambassador for five seasons," commented Hitmen Assistant General Manager and Direction of Business Operations Mike Moore. "His leadership ability in the dressing room and involvement outside of the rink exemplifies what all WHL players should strive to be. We are incredibly proud of Cody and what his program has achieved."
Entering his last year in the Western Hockey League and fifth consecutive season with the Calgary Hitmen, Sylvester knew he wanted to make a difference during the 2012-13 campaign. In the off-season he began to design the Chance To Play t-shirt, the cornerstone of his program. These unique one-of-a-kind shirts were printed by Kaos Design, owned by Sylvester's mom Kim Sylvester and stepfather Wayne Muzyka, and sold during Hitmen home games, various events at the Scotiabank Saddledome and in the community. In addition, corporate donations and 50/50 proceeds supported the cause.
