Trenton Thunder News Release
(Portland, ME) - Peter Hissey's first home run of the season, a three-run blast in the bottom of the 11th inning, gave the Portland Sea Dogs a 7-4 win against the Trenton Thunder in the opener of a three-game series Monday night at Hadlock Field. Hissey's long ball ended a 3 hour, 40 minute contest in which the Thunder squandered three early leads and walked a season-high 12 batters.
Trenton put runners on second and third with none out in the top in the 11th against Portland reliever Will Latimer (2-3) and a walk to Yadil Mujica, a pickoff throwing error and a single by Jose Pirela. But Kevin Mahoney popped out to shallow left field and David Adams lined into a double play, with the shortstop Derrik Gibson doubling Mujica off third base to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, Craig Heyer (2-4) retired the first batter but then issued a single to Bryce Brentz and a walk to Dan Butler. Hissey then swung at the first pitch and lined the ball over the right field fence for his first homer in 117 at-bats this season. Each of Portland's wins at Hadlock Field against Trenton this season (2-7) have come on walk-off home run.
Neil Medchill and David Adams eached homered against Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt for the Thunder, who had leads of 1-0, 3-2 and 4-3 only to see Portland come back and tie the score each time. Jackie Bradley Jr. and Jeremy Hazelbaker hit back-to-back homers to begin the night for the Sea Dogs against Trenton starter Vidal Nuno, who allowed three runs in five innings and walked five.
The teams will continue the series with game two on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. Left-hander Shaeffer Hall (8-6, 3.42) is expected to start for Trenton while Portland counters with righty Stolmy Pimentel (3-4, 5.00). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.
