Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Lynchburg Hillcats survived a late-game push by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers as they won 7-6 on Wednesday night.
Yorman Gomez pitched a gem throwing nearly six innings of three-hit baseball. Despite a rough seventh inning, Lynchburg was able to shut the door tonight behind arm of Jack Jasiak who picked up his first professional save.
Fayetteville put a run on the board first thanks to Luis Baez, who picked up his fourth double in three games to drive home Tyler Whitaker in the fourth inning.
Lynchburg would explode in the bottom inning, putting up six runs after each of the first eight batters of the inning reached. Lynchburg would load up the bases before a walk to Zac Fascia would tie things up at one. From there, back-to-back singles by Jose Devers and Carson Tucker would put the Hillcats in front.
Pres Cavenaugh would walk home another run to bring the lead up to three. Lexer Saduy would bring plate a fourth Hillcat in the inning on an RBI single of his own. Tyresse Turner would cap off the inning with a two-run bloop single to left field that would tack on two more, giving Lynchburg a 6-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Devers would strike again with a solo blast to center field to extend the lead even further for the Hillcats. For Devers, the home run was his third of the year.
The Woodpeckers would get another run back in the sixth when Baez would pick up his second RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly to score Whitaker again. Fayetteville would unleash in the seventh inning as four runs would score through the course of the frame. The inning was put together by two separate two-RBI singles from Dauri Lorenzo and John Garcia.
From there, Jasiak would enter the ballgame and pick up the final seven outs needed to close out the ballgame. He would record five strikeouts en route to his first save.
Lynchburg and Fayetteville will square off for game three of the series on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Bank of the James Stadium.
