Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
After giving up double-digit runs a night ago, the Pelicans once again fell victim to the Hillcats' dangerous lineup in an 11-1 loss on Saturday night. That marks the third-straight loss in a row for Myrtle Beach and moves them to 7-10 on the season. Lynchburg improves to 13-4 and clinches their second series victory of the season.
The loss went to Pelicans' starter Adam Laskey (0-2) who gave up five runs for the second time this season. Laskey was taken out after 1.2 innings pitched after also allowing six hits and walking three.
Yohendrick Pinango (2-4) continued his solid run with another multi-hit game as he extended his hitting streak to four games. Pinango now has six hits during this four-game stretch. Jonathan Sierra (2-4, HR) hit his first home run of the season for the Birds' only run of the night.
After exploding for 14 runs last night, Lynchburg put up another dazzling hitting performance with 11 runs off 15 hits. With two home runs last night, Jhonkensy Noel (5-5, 3 RBI, 2 R) followed it up with a five-hit three-RBI showing with all of his hits being singles. Andres Melendez (3-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI) became the second Hillcat in as many games to hit multiple home runs, and Johnathan Rodriguez (2-5, 2B, RBI, R) also collected a multi-hit game.
The home team pitched well, with Daritzon Feliz (1-1) picking up the win after throwing three innings in relief with one earned run off four hits. Jerson Ramirez closed out the game striking out five Pelicans out of the six he faced.
While the Pelicans were the team that got out to an early lead last night, the Hillcats pounced in the first two innings to take an early advantage. Noel singled with two outs for his first hit in the opening frame and was brought home by Johnathan Rodriguez via an RBI double to left field to put the home team up 1-0.
After the Pelicans stranded one runner in the top of the second, Lynchburg distanced themselves in the bottom half. Alexfri Planez led off the inning with a double to left field, Cody Farhat walked and Yordys Valdes singled to load up the bases. Angel Martinez worked a walk off Laskey to score Planez and make the Lynchburg lead 2-0. Noel collected his second hit with a bloop single to shallow left which scored Farhat and Valdes. Laskey then threw a wild pitch that got to the backstop and plated Martinez to make it 5-0 early in the game.
Myrtle Beach threatened in the top of the fourth with Santana hitting a single to lead off the inning, but he was later thrown out trying to steal second base. Pinango singled with one out but was stranded at first to end the inning.
The Hillcats put on another blow in the fourth inning with four more runs. Micah Pries doubled to lead off the inning and was hit in by Noel with yet another RBI single. Melendez came up two batters later after Yainer Diaz was hit by a pitch and brought everybody home with a three-run home run to put Lynchburg up big 9-0.
While the Hillcats overcame a nine-run deficit the night before, the Pelicans did not have an answer in this contest. Sierra singled to lead off the fifth inning, and catcher Raymond Pena joined him on base also with a single. Reivaj Garcia came up with one out and grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Melendez hit his second homer in the sixth inning with a solo shot to right field off new Myrtle Beach pitcher Carlos Ocampo. It was the second game in a row that the Pelicans have given up a multi-home run game, with Noel blasting two homers last night.
Myrtle Beach scored their only run of the game with a Sierra home run in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 10-1 ballgame. The home run was the first of the season for Sierra and the ninth of his career.
The eighth inning brought one more run for Lynchburg as the Hillcats started the inning with runners on second and third, as Johnathan Rodriguez singled and Melendez doubled. After a rare switch of Raymond Pena moving from catcher to pitcher for the Birds, Valdes hit a sacrifice fly to score Rodriguez and make it a 10-run deficit.
The Pelicans and Hillcats will meet for the sixth and final time of the series tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
