
First Fireworks Night Ends in Walk-Off Fashion

North Augusta, SC - The GreenJackets gave up three runs to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Houston Astros) in the 9th inning and trailed it 5-3. No problem. Augusta scored three times in the 9th and won it 6-5. It was Javier Valdes to deliver the game winning hit on a single down the left field line to score two runs.
The GreenJackets guaranteed themselves a series split going into the finale tomorrow with the Woodpeckers.
In the 1st inning, after Darius Vines collected two strikeouts to start the game, Joe Perez went deep to make it 1-0 Fayetteville.
The GreenJackets responded with a home run of their own in the 2nd inning. Brandon Parker launched his first of the year to tie the score at one. Jackets starting pitcher Darius Vines finished after four innings allowing just one run.
In the 4th inning, after Parker walked to start the inning, Braulio Vasquez tripled to send the Jackets in front at 2-1. Fayetteville went back to the long ball in the 5th inning though. This time it was Matthew Barefoot. The solo blast tied the score at two.
In the 6th inning, with two outs, Vasquez walked. He then stole 2nd base. It was Bryson Horne with an opposite field single, and the GreenJackets led 3-2.
Ben Thompson came in for two innings out of the Jackets bullpen allowing one run. Gabriel Rodriguez went 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball followed by 1.2 frames of shutout ball from Ben Dum.
In the 9th inning though, with two outs, Perez hit his 2nd home run of the game to tie it up. off After a Nerio Rodriguez single, Justin Dirden homered to make it a 5-3 Fayetteville lead.
The GreenJackets wouldn't go quietly. In the 9th inning, Cam Shepherd walked with one out. Cade Bunnell drew a walk. Then it was Vaughn Grissom who took a pitch off his elbow. The bases were loaded and Willie Carter walked to make it a 5-4 game.
Javier Valdes delivered the knockout blow on a single down the left field line, and the Jackets won it 6-5.
NOTES:
Willie Carter extended his on-base streak to 14 games.
Braulio Vasquez stole his 13th base of the season. He leads the Low-A East in stolen bases.
Darius Vines has allowed only one run in 12 innings this year.
