Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - In another high scoring affair, the Delmarva Shorebirds emerged victorious over the Carolina Mudcats, 12-8, on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds (12-5) rebounded after back-to-back losses to the Mudcats (10-7) to take a 3-2 series lead.
The scoring started early as Carolina plated a run in the top of the first. With one out, Noah Campbell slapped a double to left center and after a fly out Ernesto Martinez brought him in with a bloop single to make it 1-0 Carolina.
Hudson Haskin started the bottom of the inning for Delmarva with a hustle double before advancing to third on a groundout. Gunnar Henderson then stroked a single to left to score Haskin and tie the game at 1-1. JD Mundy followed with a single to center with Henderson speeding to third. Cristopher Cespedes then singled back through the box to score Henderson and put Delmarva ahead 2-1.
Carolina answered promptly in the top of the second. Joey Wiemer began the frame with a walk and then stole second. Ashton McGee then drew a free pass before Alex Hall singled to load the bases. A run came home to tie the game at 2-2 when Arbert Cipion bounced into a 6-4-3 double play. With McGee now at third and two out, Felix Valerio beat out an infield single, scoring McGee, and putting Carolina ahead 3-2. Gabe Holt followed with a single to put two aboard. Campbell then came up and singled to right to score Valerio but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
In the bottom half, Mason Janvrin led off with a single to center. After Janvrin stole second, Ramon Rodriguez banged a double off the right field wall to put runners at second and third. Darell Hernaiz tied the game at 3-3 as he singled to center with Rodriguez going to third. Haskin continued the inning with an RBI flare single to right with Hernaiz going first to third on an error from the right fielder. Haskin then stole second before Anthony Servideo walked to load the bases. Henderson promptly unloaded the bases as he belted a bases clearing double to left center to put Delmarva up 7-4, but Henderson was thrown out trying for third. Mundy restarted the rally by walking with Cespedes following with another base knock. Another walk to Jordan Cannon reloaded the bases. Janvrin pushed the lead to 8-4 with a run-scoring fielder's choice, putting runners at the corners. A wild pitch then allowed Cespedes to trot home from third to cap the seven-run inning with Delmarva ahead 9-4.
Delmarva capitalized on more Carolina miscues in the third. Haskin reached on an error with one away and Servideo subsequently walked. A wild pitch pushed both into scoring position before Henderson picked up another RBI with a run-scoring single to left, making it 10-4. Mundy turned it up to 11 with an RBI single to follow Henderson.
With runners now at first and third, Cespedes bounced into an RBI fielder's choice, putting Delmarva up 12-4. Carolina scraped back a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Holt to make it 12-5. Three more came across in the seventh for Carolina on a solo homer for Joe Gray Jr., his fourth of the year, and a two-run shot for Hall, his first of the campaign, bringing the game to its final line of 12-8.
Adam Stauffer (3-0) earns the win for Delmarva with 2.1 innings of shutout baseball out of the bullpen. Stauffer allowed just one hit while striking out three.
Jhoan Cruz (1-1) started for Carolina and was hung with the loss. Cruz allowed nine runs in 1.1 innings on 10 hits and two walks.
Jake Lyons started for Delmarva but did not factor into the decision. Lyons lasted 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and five walks while striking out one.
Every player in the Shorebirds lineup reached base at least once with eight of nine scoring a run and six of nine driving in a run. As a team, Delmarva finished 8-for-18 with runners in scoring position. Henderson tallied his second five RBI night of the season, going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Mundy also collected three hits, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Gray Jr. homered for the second straight game for Carolina while Valerio picked up three hits in a 3-for-4 performance to help spur on the Mudcats.
The series between the Shorebirds and Mudcats reaches its conclusion on Sunday, May 23 at Perdue Stadium.
