Hickory Crawdads News Release
Crawdads starter Dustin Molleken pitched the longest outing for a Hickory starter this season and his offense backed him up with 12 hits Wednesday, leading the Crawdads to a 6-3 win over the Augusta GreenJackets at L.P. Frans Stadium. While Molleken held the Augusta bats in check, Hickory's bats woke up early with runs in each of the first four innings. Highlighting the early splurge was Marcus Davis, who hit a three-run blast over the right field wall in the third inning to pad Hickory's lead to 5-0.
Previous Hickory runs had scored thanks to a Miles Durham RBI fielder's choice and a Bobby Spain RBI double.
The Crawdads (10-10) would extend their lead as high as 6-0 with a Durham RBI single in the fourth before the GreenJackets (10-10) started chipping away.
Solo home runs from Jackson Williams, Thomas Neal and Ramon Corona in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, respectively, cut Hickory's lead to 6-3.
But Crawdads reliever Ronald Uviedo would take it from there, pitching two scoreless innings to secure his second save of the season and send Hickory back to .500.
In all, eight Hickory starters knocked at least one hit on the evening and all nine reached base.
Leading the offense were Durham (2-4, 2 RBI, 1 R), Spain (2-4, 1 RBI), Matt Cavagnaro (2-4, 1 R) and Jose De Los Santos (2-5, 2 R).
De Los Santos' first-inning double extended his hitting streak to 11 games, tying the season long for Hickory (Durham: Apr. 5-16).
Molleken improved to 2-1 with the win, allowing the three home runs but striking out four while walking just one and scattering six hits.
Augusta starter Oliver Odle (1-2) took the loss, having allowed all six earned runs in 3.2 innings.
The teams meet for game two of the series Thursday, as former South Caldwell High School star Madison Bumgarner returns to Hickory.
Bumgarner, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2007 draft by the San Francisco Giants, will start against Hickory's Rafael Delossantos in a 6:30 p.m. game.
