Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON - The Charleston RiverDogs have placed two highly-touted New York Yankees prospects - catcher Austin Romine and pitcher Jairo Heredia - on the disabled list, the Yankees announced Wednesday. Infielder Dan Cox will join the RiverDogs from the Gulf Coast Yankees roster.

Romine was removed in the eighth inning of last night's 6-3 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats after reaching second base on Wady Rufino's go-ahead RBI single. He suffered a lower-body injury.

The number 22 prospect in the entire Yankees organization, according to Baseball America, has been one of the hottest hitters in the South Atlantic League (SAL) over the past two weeks, raising his average to a season-high .396 and a current .351 mark. The California native had notched six straight multi-hit games over an eight-day span from April 12 through April 20.

Heredia, whose DL placing is retroactive to April 21, is suffering from an upper-body injury. He had recorded a 2-0 record with a 3.48 ERA in four starts. In 20.2 innings pitched, the Dominican native has surrendered 12 runs (eight earned) on 19 hits, with seven walks and 22 strikeouts.

Heredia, who is Baseball America's 20th ranked Yankees prospect, was victorious in his last outing on April 20, allowing four runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings of work, with two walks and six strikeouts in an 11-7 triumph over the Columbus Catfish.

Cox is currently in his second professional season, after splitting time in 2007 with the GCL Yankees and the RiverDogs. The former University of Washington standout appeared in two games with Charleston last season and did not collect a hit in five at-bats. In five games in the Gulf Coast League, Cox posted a .167 average (1-for-6) with a run scored.
