Hickory Crawdads News Release

Highly touted San Francisco Giants prospect and former South Caldwell High School star Madison Bumgarner is scheduled to start for the Augusta GreenJackets at L.P. Frans Stadium Thursday night.

The Hickory Crawdads host Augusta and welcome home the left-handed Bumgarner, selected by San Francisco as the 10th overall draft pick of the 2007 draft and scheduled to start Thursday's game against Crawdads right-hander Rafael Delossantos.

Bumgarner, ranked by Baseball America as the No. 3 prospect in the San Francisco organization, has gone 1-2 in his first professional season, allowing 10 runs while striking out 15 in 11.2 innings. After signing for a $2 million bonus late in 2007, Bumgarner did not play last year. This marks his first trip to Hickory in his pro career.

At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Bumgarner was the first high-school lefthander selected by the Giants in the first round since 1987. His mid-90s fastball and impressive size have drawn rave reviews from many organizations, including Baseball America, which said "Bumgarner has everything the Giants look for in a pitching prospect - size, athleticism and velocity."

Bumgarner's storied high school career included a successful turn as a right-handed hitter in addition to his left-handed pitching. Bumgarner led South Caldwell to a pair of North Carolina 4-A state championships.
