Charleston RiverDogs Announce "250 Boom Salute" to Celebrate America's Semiquincentennial

Charleston, SC - In honor of America's 250th birthday, the Charleston RiverDogs today unveiled a bold, patriotic, and slightly unhinged new tradition for the 2026 season: for every home run hit at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, a re-commissioned Revolutionary War cannon will be fired from Brittlebank Park across the Ashley River.

The initiative, officially titled the "250 Boom Salute", is designed to commemorate the semiquincentennial of the United States with a combination of baseball, history, and a level of volume not typically associated with Minor League games.

"Two hundred and fifty years ago, this country was born with a bang," said President and General Manager Dave Echols. "This season, every RiverDogs home run will honor that spirit with another one."

A Celebration 250 Years in the Making

Timed to coincide with nationwide celebrations of America's founding, the RiverDogs' program pays tribute to Charleston's deep Revolutionary War roots while also ensuring that a solo shot to left comes with the acoustic presence of a full-scale battlefield reenactment.

The cannon, affectionately dubbed "Liberty Launcher No. 1", will be stationed at Brittlebank Park and fired ceremonially after each confirmed home run.

Fans inside the ballpark will see the blast synchronized on the video board, while those across the Ashley River will experience what team officials describe as "a respectful but unmistakable reminder that offense is happening."

Safety (Mostly), Precision, and Patriotism

The RiverDogs emphasized that all cannon fire will be:

Ceremonial only, using powder charges (no projectiles unless a rogue British ship is spotted) triggered only after RiverDogs home runs, meaning our pitchers have a clear path to peace and quiet.

Early internal modeling suggests that a high-scoring night could result in "multiple celebratory booms," creating what one team executive described as "the most historically accurate box score in Minor League Baseball."

Complimentary earplugs will be available at guest services, though the team notes that "true patriots may choose to experience the full sound of freedom."

A Message to Charleston

The RiverDogs acknowledge that on game nights, those on the peninsula and surrounding areas may notice an increase in "historic enthusiasm".

"We view this as a shared civic experience," Echols noted. "Some cities light fireworks. Charleston will be... slightly more committed."

The Charleston RiverDogs are Charleston's Minor League Baseball team and a proud Single-A affiliate of the Tampa Rays, known for their creative promotions, strong community ties, and occasional willingness to take things just a bit too far.
