Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder Jason Heyward has been named Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of May 11-17. The announcement marked the first time Heyward has earned the honor in his Pelicans career and the first time a Myrtle Beach player has claimed a Carolina League weekly award this year.

Heyward batted .316 (6-for-19) for the week, connecting for three home runs and scoring four runs while adding a double, five runs batted in and five walks against just one strikeout. The 19-year-old also stole a base and had hits in three of his last four games including a 3-3 performance with a double and a home run May 13 against Frederick.

One of the most highly-touted prospects in the Atlanta Braves farm system, Heyward has seen time in 29 games for the Pelicans this season. The McDonough, Georgia native was taken by the Braves with the 14th overall selection in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He entered 2009 ranked as the top prospect in the Atlanta farm system by MLB.com and second best in the organization by Baseball America.

The Pelicans open a four-game road series with the Winston-Salem Dash tonight, their first meeting with the Dash this season. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 7:00 in Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans return home to BB&T Coastal Field for a weekend series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks Friday through Sunday before welcoming the Dash to town next Tuesday through Thursday. Tickets are available for the Pelicans' six-game homestand by contacting the Pelicans box office at (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
