Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va- After starting out scorching for one of the top rotations in the Carolina League, Tom Milone found that staying on top is easier said than done.
Milone regained his early season dominance of Carolina League hitters by tossing eight shutout innings in Friday night's 4-0 Potomac victory against Myrtle Beach to earn himself Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of May 11-17.
Milone began the season going 1-0 in his first two starts, only allowing one earned run in his first 11 1/3 innings pitched. Milone then suffered setbacks in his next two starts, allowing nine earned runs in his next 10 1/3 frames.
As the P-Nat rotation started tossing shutouts with the regularity of the changing tides, Milone was temporarily placed in the bullpen to work through his struggles. Given a spot start in Winston-Salem on May 10, Milone bounced back by giving the team 6 1/3 solid innings, earning the win in a 5-4 Potomac victory.
With Erik Arnesen's promotion to Double-A Harrisburg, Milone earned himself another start May 15 against Myrtle Beach and made a statement about his intentions on holding onto his spot in the rotation.
Milone baffled the Pelicans for eight shutout innings, the longest outing by a P-Nat pitcher this season, allowing only four hits and equaling his career high in strikeouts with seven. Milone's control was impeccable as he did not walk a batter.
Just for good measure, Milone also picked off two Pelican baserunners at first base.
This is the second consecutive Pitcher of the Week honor bestowed upon the P-Nats as Brad Meyers took home the award for the week of May 4-10.
On the season, Milone owns a 3-2 record with a 3.11 ERA which is good for ninth in the Carolina League. He has struck out 24 and walked only seven in 37 2/3 innings.
He will face the powerful Kinston Indians Thursday from Grainger Stadium.
The P-Nats start a four-game set with the K-Tribe Monday evening with first pitch starting at 7:05 ET. You can catch all the action live on www.potomacnationals.com with Dan McGinn and Anthony Masterson starting with the pregame show at 6:45 ET.
