Trenton Thunder News Release
(Akron, OH) - Craig Heyer combined with three relievers on a seven-hitter and Cody Johnson smacked a mammoth home run as the Trenton Thunder defeated Akron, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Canal Park to avoid a four-game sweep. Heyer (1-1) tied a career-high with seven strikeouts in six solid innings.
With the game scoreless in the fourth, Johnson hit the first pitch from Eric Berger (0-2) well over the right-field fence for his third home run of the season. The shot cleared the right-field bleacher seats and traveled well over 400 feet. Jose Gil followed with an RBI single two batters later to put the Thunder ahead 2-0.
That was all the Trenton pitchers would need, as Heyer worked the first six and gave up one run on five hits and did not walk a batter. Kelvin Perez pitched 1.2 scoreless frames and left with the bases loaded and two out in the home eighth. Lee Hyde then induced a pop out from the only batter he faced Nick Weglarz to escape the jam.
Ryan Flannery pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth to record his first Eastern League save, getting Roberto Perez on strikes looking to end the game.
In the bottom of the eighth Roberto Perez singled off Kelvin Perez to lead off and moved to third with nobody out when Tim Fedroff reached on second-baseman Addison Maruszak's fielding error. Kelvin then struck out Juan Diaz and got Jared Goedert to pop out to short to keep the tying runner at third before Hyde finished the inning.
Johnson paced Trenton's seven-hit attack by going 2-for-4. Goedert, Perez and Ryan Rohlinger each had a pair of hits for the Aeros, who won the series 3 games to 1.
The Thunder continue the seven-game road trip Monday night in Erie with the opener of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm. Thunder left Shaeffer Hall (1-1) is expected to pitch against Erie righty James Avery (1-0). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and streaming online begins at 6:20 pm.
