Hershey Bears News Release

PHILADELPHIA - The Hershey Bears fired 39 shots at Philadelphia Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe Friday night, and the three that found the back of the net were enough to hold off the Phantoms 3-2 in the first game of a home and home series between the two clubs this weekend.

The Bears took an early 1-0 lead just 2:04 into the first period. With the Phantoms trying to get the puck out of their own zone, Mathieu Perreault lifted the stick of Claude Giroux just inside the Phantoms blue line. He took the puck and found an open Francois Bouchard in front who wristed a shot over the shoulder of Munroe.

Philadelphia answered back at the 11:15 mark of the first period. On a bang-bang play, Giroux won a right-wing circle faceoff in the Hershey zone and sent a pass towards the front of the net. As soon as the puck was dropped, Boyd Kane darted towards the net and slid it through the five hole of Bears goaltender Simeon Varmalov before he could even react to the play.

Hershey regained the lead 7:36 into the second period. Chris Bourque, who waited for an opening in front, fired a slapshot on net from the top of the blue line. Munroe made the initial pad save, but the rebound fell perfectly to the stick of Graham Mink who deposited the puck in the wide open net.

An unlucky bounce made the score 3-1 at 10:42 of the period. While working with a man advantage, Bryan Helmer took the puck deep into the Phantoms zone. He played it back along the boards to Andrew Gordon who quickly sent it over to Bourque at the top of the blue-line. Bourque flung what seemed to be a harmless wrister on goal that knuckled off the ice and hopped over the glove of Munroe.

The Phantoms cut the lead to one on a shorthanded tally at 12:41 of the second period. With Hershey on the power play, Jonathon Kalinski stole the puck at center ice and raced towards the Bears net on a 2-on-1 with Matt Clackson. Streaking down the left side wing, Kalinski called his own number and wristed a shot through Varmalov to make the score 3-2.

The Phantoms had opportunities to even the score in the third period, but could not convert late in the game, leaving the Phantoms with just their second loss in their last nine games. Philadelphia came up empty on both of their power play chances while Hershey was 1 for 6 with the man advantage. Munroe made 36 saves on the 39 shots he faced, and Varmalov turned away 22 of the Phantoms 24 shots.
