Grand Rapids, MI, October 22, 2008: Defenseman Jakub Kindl notched the power-play game-winning goal and an assist to lead the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 3-2 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night, in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
P.A. Parenteau tallied a goal and an assist for the Wolf Pack, extending his point-scoring streak to five games. Darren Helm also contributed a goal and an assist for the Griffins, and Ville Leino posted a pair of helpouts.
Parenteau gave the Wolf Pack the game's first lead at 5:53 of the first period. Parenteau snapped a shot from the top of the circles through Grand Rapids goaltender Jimmy Howard, after Artem Anisimov and newly-assigned Patrick Rissmiller combined to dig the puck out deep in the zone. Tom Galvin replied for the Griffins with 1:28 remaining in the period, as he drove a shot off of a Wolf Pack defender and past netminder Miika Wiikman.
Hartford regained the advantage just 1:05 into the second period on a goal by Greg Moore. Moore and Parenteau exchanged passes around the Griffin goalmouth before Moore slid the puck past Howard, his former University of Maine teammate. Moore has scored in back-to-back games, and three of his last four, after being held without a goal for the season's first nine contests.
Grand Rapids would draw even again on a power play at 6:31. Helm, who played 18 playoff games with the Stanley Cup-winning Detroit Red Wings, the Griffins' parent club, last spring, pounded a shot from the top of the right-wing circle that hit Wiikman's glove and went into the top of the net.
The decisive goal came at the 12:00 mark of the third period. Kindl drove a shot from the middle of the blueline that went through a crowd and eluded Wiikman, after Dale Weise had picked up four minutes in penalties at 9:07. Referee Ian Croft assessed two minutes against Weise for goaltender interference and two more for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Grand Rapids power play was 2/7 in the contest, and the Wolf Pack were held to an 0/5 night with the man advantage. Howard stopped 20 shots to get the win in the Griffin net, and Wiikman made 27 saves in his 11th start in the Wolf Pack's 13 games.
The loss dropped the Wolf Pack back to the .500 mark on the year, at 6-6-0-1 for 13 points, and Hartford fell to 0-3-0-1 on the road.
