April 16, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo (7-3) topped Durham by a score of 3-1 at Fifth Third Field on Monday night. Hens pitchers held the Bulls to just four hits, while Toledo scattered seven throughout the weather shortened game.
RHP Warwick Saupold got the nod for the Mud Hens on Monday, going three innings and scattering two hits with no runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. Josh Turley (1-0) came on in relief for the righty in the fourth and pitched through the sixth inning, allowing only one hit and earning himself the win. Righty Zac Reininger pitched a scoreless seventh for Toledo.
The other side of the lineup saw Anthony Banda on the mound for Durham, going 4 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, including four walks.
Toledo threatened early in the first, following lead-off singles off the bats of CF Mikie Mahtook and RF Mike Gerber. The Hens grabbed the lead on a sac fly from 2B Dawel Lugo, scoring Mahtook. Banda then loaded the bases following walks to DH Chad Huffman and 1B Edwin Espinal. LF Christin Stewart drew the bases-loaded walk, bringing in Toledo's second run.
Toledo again loaded the bases in the second, following a hit-by-pitch, fielding error, and walk. SS Ronny Rodriguez grounded out to second, ending Toledo's bid to extend their lead.
Espinal led off the third inning with a sharp single to the shortstop and was quickly brought home on an RBI double to center from Stewart, extending Toledo's lead to 3-0.
Durham got on the board with their only run in the fourth on a Justin Williams RBI single given up by LHP Josh Turley. Turley left two baserunners stranded in the inning, ending Durham's bid to cut into the Toledo lead further.
Toledo strung together back-to-back singles from C Greyson Greiner and 3B Pete Kozma in the bottom of the fifth, but Durham reliever Ian Gibaut caught Mahtook looking, ending the Mud Hens' threat.
The game was called in the seventh due to snowy conditions.
Toledo returns to action against Durham on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. from Fifth Third Field.
