Bats Back Allard in 6-1 Win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Gwinnett Stripers' pitching staff, led by starter Kolby Allard, limited the potent Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' offense to just one run in a 6-1 victory Monday at Coolray Field.

The win snapped a 10-game home losing streak (including playoffs) to the RailRiders dating back to April 28, 2015.

Allard, rated No. 6 in the Braves' system by MLB.com, breezed through a RailRiders lineup that entered the game leading the International League in team batting average, home runs and runs scored. The lefty surrendered just four hits, two walks and one earned run over 5.2 innings, securing his first win at the Triple-A level.

The combination of relievers David Peterson, Jesse Biddle and Jason Hursh finished off the final 3.1 innings allowing two hits and one walk while fanning three.

Meanwhile, the Stripers tied a season high for runs in a game with six, with a steady burst from start to finish.

Jaff Decker got the scoring started early, launching a 381-foot home run to right field in the first inning for his first long ball of the season.

In the fourth inning, Decker led off with a walk but was caught stealing for the second time this season. Carlos Franco then walked and moved to second on a single by Dustin Peterson. Franco scored on a single by Rio Ruiz, and Peterson scored on a Rob Brantly sacrifice fly, giving the Stripers a 3-0 lead.

The RailRiders got their lone run in the fifth after a lead-off single by Billy Fleming and a one-out walk to Zack Zehner. Abiatal Avelino singled home Fleming and Allard was pulled two batters later.

Gwinnett pushed three more insurance runs across in the eighth inning with four consecutive batters reaching base: a Peterson walk, a Ruiz RBI double, a Brantly single and a Christian Colon RBI single. Johan Camargo finished the job with an RBI single of his own.

The Stripers' 5-through-8 hitters - Peterson, Ruiz, Brantly and Colon - combined to go 8-for-15 with a walk and four RBIs. Colon also became the first Striper to have three hits in a game this season, going 3-for-4. Ruiz finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, bringing his average to .212 on the young season.

The two teams meet again Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. Right-hander Mike Soroka (1-0, 1.69 ERA) starts for Gwinnett, while the RailRiders will go with righty Luis Cessa. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call with Nick Green on color commentary on MiLB.TV beginning at 7:00 p.m.
