Hellebuyck Stands Tall as IceCaps Blank Marlies

St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps were on the right side of a defensive battle on Tuesday night as they topped the Toronto Marlies 2-0 at Mile One Centre.

Patrice Cormier scored the game-winner late in the second period and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck recorded his first shutout as a professional and kicked aside all 23 shots he faced.

After a scoreless opening frame, Cormier opened the scoring with 2:26 remaining in the second period. With defenceman Julien Brouillette in the penalty box for tripping, Cormier picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and muscled his way to a partial breakaway on Marlies starter Christopher Gibson. He made no mistake in tucking the puck under Gibson's blocker for a shorthanded goal, his second of the season. The goal was unassisted.

The IceCaps shut the door in the third period to secure their second win in their last three games, thanks in large part to the strong play of Hellebuyck.

Eric O'Dell added an empty net goal in the final minute to lock up the victory for the IceCaps. Chase Balisy and JC Lipon drew assists.

The IceCaps host the Toronto Marlies again tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 19th for the finale of their two-game set. Tickets are available at the Mile One Centre Box Office in-person from 12-5 p.m., by phone at 709-576-7657 and online at www.mileonecentre.com.
