Heemskerk Excels In Overtime Loss At Kelowna

Everett, WA - Thomas Heemskerk turned in his finest performance as a Silvertip, though the Kelowna Rockets scored a late equalizer and Mikael Backlund potted the game winner with 21 seconds left in overtime as Everett fell 2-1 Friday evening at Prospera Place. Tyler Maxwell scored the lone goal for the Silvertips bringing the rookie forward to 40 points on the season (20G, 20A). WHL rookie scoring leader Kellan Tochkin added an assist to his league leading totals bringing the Everett forward to 56 points this year (14G, 42A). Kelowna's power play in its previous six games was an astounding 48 percent, yet Everett held the Rockets to 0 of 6 Friday night.

This brings the 'Tips record to 22-23-7-2 with 53 points in 54 games played taking them to sixth place in the Western Conference. Everett stands four points behind fifth place Kamloops Blazers and 12 points behind fourth place Kelowna Rockets. The Silvertips are now 1-5-2-2 in their last 10 games. The Silvertips head home for a Saturday night match up against Kyle Beach and the Lethrbridge Hurricanes at 7:05.

Earning the games first star, Heemskerk came to the rescue in the first 40 minutes of play stopping all 30 shots faced while the Silvertips could only muster up seven shots on Kelowna goalie Mark Guggenberger.

Early in the third period the kid line opened up the scoring, a Tochkin point shot was stopped by Gagguenberger before Byron Froese hacked the puck across the crease to Maxwell for the 20th goal of his rookie season. The goal came at 4:18 giving Everett the 1-0 lead.

Late in the third period with five minutes to play a Tyson Barrie point shot was stopped by Heemskerk, though the puck trickled past him as Colin Long poked the puck into the net to tie the game 1-1. Everett was outshot 15-41 in regulation.

Kelowna outshot Everett 7-1 in overtime as Kyle St. Denis drifted behind the Everett net before dishing a feed into the slot to a streaking Backlund, who one-timed it past Heemskerk for the game winner.
