Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winter Hawks get two third period goals and Ian Curtis made 39 saves to lead the Portland Winter Hawks to a 3-1 win over the Tri City Americans in front of 5505 at the Rose Garden on Friday night.

Portland got the game winning goal from 16 year old forward Brad Ross on a tremendous passing play with Riley Boychuk setting up Colin Reddin who fed a backhand pass to Ross who lifted a forehand shot over the leg of Tri City goaltender Chet Pickard three minutes into the final period while the Hawks were on the power play.

Boychuk then scored the insurance marker on a breakaway, set up by Tayler Jordan and Brett Ponich with three minutes remaining, lifting a backhand into the top corner over the glove hand of Pickard.

Tri City got on the scoreboard first when Jason Reese beat Curtis with a slap shot five minutes into the opening period, but that would be the only goal that Curtis would allow.

Portland tied the score, again on the power play, when Radim Valchar tipped home a Travis Ehrhardt entry shot halfway through the second period. Chris Francis also had an assist on the play.

Curtis made 39 saves, including all 21 shots he faced in the third period, to pick up his second win as a Winter Hawk. Pickard stopped 17 of 20 in the loss for Tri City.

On special teams, Portland went 2 for 6 on the power play while killing all seven power play chances against.

The victory for Portland snapped a 12 game losing streak, a stretch where Portland went 0-9-1-2.

Next up, the Hawks will host the Vancouver Giants at 7:00 in the Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night.
