Charleston RiverDogs News Release

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Drew Hedman went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, four RBI, and three runs scored to lead the Greenville Drive over the Charleston RiverDogs, 8-4, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of a crowd of 3,430 fans at Fluor Field.

Greenville halted a three-game skid and avoided a sweep to move to 18-20, while Charleston saw its season-best five-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 17-21.

Anthony Ranaudo (3-1) quickly set the RiverDogs down in order in the top of the first, giving the Drive offense the opportunity to jump out to a 3-0 lead off Charleston starter Jose A. Ramirez (1-1).

Felix Sanchez and Heiker Meneses worked walks in front of Hedman, who powered his second home run of the season over the right field fence for a three-run shot.

Two more free passes and a catcher's interference call enabled Greenville to scratch out two more runs in the bottom of the third. Once again, the actual damage came with two outs, as David Renfroe lined a two-run single to left for a 5-0 Drive advantage.

Charleston wreaked some two-out havoc of its own to get on the scoreboard in the fourth. J.R. Murphy led off the inning with a single, and came home to score three batters later when Gary Sanchez sailed his fourth home run of the season over the Green Monster in left. The towering drive was the third homer of the series for the 18-year old Dominican, as the RiverDogs pulled within 5-2.

Ramirez slogged through the fourth inning, but not before Greenville took back one of the runs it gave up in the top half of the frame. A lack of control haunted Ramirez again, as Felix Sanchez delivered a RBI double to plate Jose Garcia, who had walked to start the inning.

That was it for Ramirez, who was unable to navigate around trouble as he did while collecting a win in his previous outing. The 21-year old righty yielded the six runs on four hits and five walks, while striking out five.

Ranaudo was bitten by the long ball once more in the fifth, as Ramon Flores connected for a solo blast to slice the RiverDogs deficit to 6-3. It was the fifth home run of the campaign, and third in as many days for the 19-year old Venezuelan left fielder.

Greenville added two more tallies in the fifth off Charleston relieve Mike Recchia to pad its cushion to 8-3. Miles Head cracked a leadoff double over the head of Eduardo Sosa in center field, and was sent scurrying home when Hedman followed suit, racking up his fourth RBI of the contest. Hedman moved to third on a groundout, and found the easy way home when Recchia balked with Josue Peley batting.

Notwithstanding the home runs, Ranaudo was effective in his third showing of the year versus the RiverDogs. The 2010 first round selection logged 5.0 innings, permitting the three runs on three hits and two walks, fanning four along the way.

The Drive bullpen rebounded from a rough series to keep the RiverDogs bats at bay over the final four innings. Juan Rodriguez penned 2.0 scoreless innings, and Charle Rosario worked around a leadoff single to escape the eighth unscathed.

Eduardo Sosa rapped his seventh double of the season to account for the final 8-4 margin off Greenville reliever Drew Dominguez. Sosa's deep fly ball to right scored Sanchez, but Dominguez retired Flores on a groundout to end any thought of an extended rally.

The RiverDogs begin a seven-game homestand with the first of a three-game series versus the Savannah Sand Gnats on Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Mikey O'Brien (2-2, 3.03 ERA) will go in search of his third straight victory for Charleston, while right-hander Ryan Fraser (2-3, 2.72 ERA) is expected to throw for the New York Mets affiliate.
