Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - Monday night's game between the Hickory Crawdads and Augusta GreenJackets at L.P. Frans Stadium was suspended in the top of the 11th inning due to rain.
The GreenJackets were leading, 6-5, but the game will not count to either team's record, and it will also not be completed since the two teams will not meet again in the first half of the season. It was called by the umpires after a 42-minute rain delay.
The Crawdads (21-15) cracked the scoreless tie early, plating the game's first run in the bottom of the second against RHP Shawn Sanford. With one away and the bases empty, 2B Odubel Herrera reached on an infield single and quickly stole second base to get in scoring position. Herrera moved to third on a single by 1B Jhonny Gomez, before racing home on a sacrifice fly by LF Jonathan Roof to put the 'Dads ahead, 1-0.
The GreenJackets (14-23) wasted no time responding, striking for a pair in the top of the third against RHP Randol Rojas to take a 2-1 lead. SS Ehire Adrianza led off with a walk, before trotting in on DH Drew Biery's two-out, two-run bomb later in the frame.
Augusta added to its lead in the top of the seventh against RHP Joe Van Meter. LF Rafael Rodriguez started the inning with a solo home run, before 2B Raynor Campbell knocked in two with a two-out double later in the frame, putting the GreenJackets ahead, 5-1.
Hickory, though, refused to go away. The 'Dads pulled within one run of tying it in the bottom of the eighth inning. SS Jurickson Profar started the inning with a walk and took second on a single by C Tomas Telis. After a double steal put them at second and third, 3B Christian Villanueva was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. DH Andrew Clark grounded a two-run single up the middle, bringing in Profar and Telis and moving Villanueva to second. Villanueva then scored from second on an RBI single by RF Josh Richmond, cutting the 'Dads deficit to just 5-4.
With the rain pouring down, the GreenJackets turned to RHP Stephen Harrold to try to close the game in the bottom of the ninth. However, Profar quickly completed the Crawdads comeback with a game-tying solo home run to start the ninth, squaring the score at 5-5. Harrold retired the next three in a row to force extra frames.
After a scoreless 10th and the rain continuing to intensify, LHP Kevin Johnson took over on the mound for Hickory to start the top of the 11th. Struggling through the rain, Johnson loaded the bases on two walks and a single around a sacrifice bunt, before issuing a go-ahead RBI walk to 2B Carlos Willoughby, putting Augusta back in front, 6-5.
Immediately after the run came in, the umpires called for the tarp and the game entered into a rain delay before being suspended 42 minutes later. Since the Crawdads never got a chance in the bottom of the 11th, the game will not end in a win or a loss for either side, but will be suspended with no completion to be scheduled.
