Abbotsford Heat News Release

Goaltender Henrik Karlsson - assigned to Abbotsford on a conditioning stint - got the nod in net for both games as the Heat took on the Western Conference's first place team, the Oklahoma City Barons.

Thursday marked the second year in a row the city of Calgary hosted an AHL battle of Alberta. The Barons struck twice in the latter half of the second period including a goal with just 28 sec- onds left in the frame and never looked back picking up the 4 - 0 win at the Saddledome.

Saturday's rematch saw the Heat fall 2-1 to the Barons as they returned to the AESC for the eighth and final contest of the season between the divi- sional rivals. The tight-checking affair was the sixth time this season that the result between these clubs was decided by two goals or fewer. Abbotsford's lone goal in the two-game set came from Ben Walter who netted his eighth tally of the season.

The Heat will renew acquain- tances with a division rival they haven't seen since mid-Novem- ber this weekend, when the Houston Aeros arrive for their first of two visits to the Valley.

The two have been jockeying for position in the West Divi- sion standings throughout the 2011-12 campaign. Entering this week's action, Houston holds a seven point edge over Abbots- ford in the standings but the Heat have one game in hand.

Though the pair of West Division teams play eight times this sea- son, an anomaly in the schedule has the duo facing off six times over a span of thirty days, start- ing this Friday at the AESC.

The only two prior meetings saw the Heat bookend their season- long 14-day road trip with games at the Toyota Center against the Aeros. To start the seven-game journey, the Heat beat the Aeros 5-3 in a tilt that saw Krys Kolanos earn three points against his for- mer club. A week and a half later, the Heat closed out the trip with a 1-0 shootout win that saw Le- land Irving stop 31 shots in regu- lation before making three more in overtime, and setting aside all five Houston opportunities in the shootout.

Goaltender Henrik Karlsson dawned an AHL uniform for the first time in his professional hockey career last Thursday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, making 21 saves on 25 shots in his Heat debut. The 28-year-old product of Tumba, Sweden was assigned to the Heat for a two week conditioning stint on Feb- ruary 5th as he makes his return from a knee injury he suffered on December 4th against the Vancouver Canucks.

Despite competing in his second NHL season this year, Karlsson had never suited up for an AHL contest before Thursday night. Prior to migrating to North America to join the Flames in 2010-11 he spent sev- eral years developing his skills in his native Sweden, most recently for Farjestad BK of the Swedish Elite League in 2009-10 when he appeared in 34 games posting a goals against average of 2.45 and a save percentage of 0.914%.
